Seat post design - your thoughts!

Posted on
  • Hi, I'm looking to design some seatposts and get them to market, its low volume and high quality. This is more related to single speed and fixed gear riders.

I'm literally just starting off in the process (have designs and visuals) so its very early days however if you can spare two minutes, i'd really like to gather some data on what people sit upon while riding.

    https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/WNPBR2P

I'm a Brit if you haven't gathered and I'm looking to get ideas off paper and into reality, so help out if you can :)

    Cheers
    Paul

  • You missed road bikes off the list, and 31.6mm off the common seatpost sizes.

  • I started the survey, but gave up when you started asking about preferences.

A seatpost must, first and foremost, be functional: you seem to be concentrating on what it looks like.

For example the choice of a setback or inline seatpost isn't about aesthetics, it's about (bike)fit.

Perhaps your survey misrepresents you, but you don't come across as knowing a great deal about the subject matter, ie bikes.

  • I completed the survey despite the bike listing including 'fixie'

lucky you caught me on a good day.

  • Completed apatr from I chose not to answer the inline/setback question and 3 potions for size? Bare jokes innit!

  • I agree with Scilly, but I completed the survey in the end.

It's an obvious question perhaps, but why are you doing this? What do you want to achieve with seatposts that better or new compared to the existing offerings?

  • Done.

  • Out of every part on my bike it's of the least interest.
    Make sexy cranks instead.

  • Make sexy cranks instead.

All of my cry-wanks are sexy, to some degree.

  • Thanks to everyone who suffered through the list of questions - much appreciated.

I posted here first as I thought it would be the toughest crowd, admitted I'm not a hardcore cyclist, I do have a Guerciotti road bike, a Mountain bike, an old school BMX, a '71 old school triumph chopper and a moped - so i'm more of a mix of a type of guy.

Like all good things, everyone has their preferences, as a designer looking to get some ideas off the ground its good to know if there is a clear favourite.

Fizzy and Scilly, yes, I cant compete with Fizik and Thompson, this is very much looking at a styling exercise rather than a revolution. Looking at colours, metal finishes, manufacturing methods.

Its possible some people wont be the target market, but when it comes to making a prototype all this information is helpful to zero in on the initial seat post.

I think I'll update the survey so some things are clearer, I think it reads as too open ended at the moment.

    Keep up the good feedback!

    Cheers
    P.

  • Survey updated!

If anyone is interested in giving feedback to some promo visuals please PM me, they are more focused on the single speed/ fixed gear market.

  • Don't let people like me put you off, but one of these is a "styling exercise" and the other is entirely adequate for the vast majority of riders:

    • funky design and available in a range of colours for £50...

    • available in black or silver and every size known to man for £15...

  • Looking at colours, metal finishes...

    Vantablack plz

  • I posted here first as I thought it would be the toughest crowd>

At the very least, thanks for posting here for this reason and not because you expected your ideas to be so cool that we were bound to give you an egowank.

  • I had to look that up: very cool (heh)!

  • It is! Stealth bike ninjas would sell kidneys for vantablack kit.

  • @ The_Seldom_killer - lol - yep, I'm after real info not ego rubbing.

I normally work on the PC game Star Citizen, so I'm used to getting feedback from the community, they are a passionate bunch!

72 survey results and counting - thank you :D

  • Answered just to see what you were on about.

  • Survey didn't work.

I do think you need a concept to start with, I want to do this ! Hand whittle from belly fluff. Belly fluff whittling,is my passion !

Instead of lets paint them pink an charge top dollar type take on it.

TBH sounds a bit Foffa to me, sorry.

  • I love the "Safety System" etching just visible on the head of the broken seatpost. You really wouldn't want that in your notcher would you.

  • That tickled me too: hadn't spotted it before.

  • @DoubtfulAce - I have 5 designs, i'm after a bit of extra info before i get prototypes made.
