Next question: is an aeroshell on a Lazer o2 helmet actually aero? It's only £15 so I suppose it probably won't make it any less aero...

I thought there would be more sidewind/higher angles, but they dont say at what speed so I guess that is the joker. But their chart is lower than other estimates, yes?

I don't think it's lower that other measurements. It suggests that the weighting of yaw angles should be more in favour of lower yaw than some wheel manufacturers would like you to think, mostly because it turns out that if you weight towards very low yaw then nobody needed to buy new wheels since Campag sold us Shamals in 1991 :-)

yes, zipp also went back to low yaw is important on their firestrike wheels.
It is also interesting that there is only 1 second between the 60mm and 90mm flo wheel.

Not sure why anybody would want their full carbon disc - slower than the aluminium rim, and $300 extra for only 40g lighter.

Struggling to find a HED3 or Zipp 808FC for a pal.
What else is worth considering (clincher only), either as an alternative to the above or as a stopgap (so somewhat cheaper and easy to sell on)?

Isn't this basically what the head honcho at Reynolds has been telling us for a while? I remember reading an interesting article/interview on the area that could be summarised as "aero experts in other fields laugh at some shapes in the new wheels" "cervelo and giant with the new propel have it right by making thin frames still"
there's obviously more, but that's what I clearly remember

If they are in other fields, they might not actually ride bikes. There's more to a good wheel than just minimum drag, otherwise we'd all use front discs :-) Most of the work in the past few years has not been focused on reducing drag at low yaw, it has been a move towards making a low drag wheel which can actually be used in cross wind conditions too.

haha true, I tried explaining the front disc thing to a triathlete once, and he downright refused to believe me, couldn't fathom that a front has more of a positive aero effect than the back #stupidslvlss
Could it lead to multiple types of aero wheel being created then? low wind and high wind ones? for example on a still day being teed up for a sprint, a sprinter would rather have a "low wind" more V shaped wheel than a "high wind" U shaped
The marketers and wheel companies would certainly jump on it

What kind of typical cruising speeds were you cycling at to get these results? 16, 18, 20mph?
We rode at a variety of speeds during our studies. Of course higher speeds produce lower yaw angles, but there wasn't a significant enough difference to worry about. What the overwhelming result was, no matter where we rode, is that yaw angles are typically much lower than we believed in the past. Our data shows that 50% of your time is spent between 0 and 5 degrees, and by the time you get to 10 degrees of yaw, you have accounted for 80%. You spend only 20% of your time between 10 and 20 degrees of yaw, and as the angles get higher, the percentage of time gets lower.
Long story short, what I've said above really holds true for the average speeds almost any athlete is maintaining.
