The fan/supporter dichotomy is a contentious one. I can't go watch my team regularly as I've moved away from where I grew up (haven't most people?) and fucking off for 6+ hours every other Saturday doesn't fit well with family life. They're rarely on telly anyway.
I occasionally take my daughter to see her team (Fulham) as it's local to us and you can get tickets on the day, but at 6 years' old she's not ready for going there every home game. At least it's teaching her a valuable lesson about disappointment.
I'm a shit fan anyway, I dislike a lot of the chanting/tribalism that goes on at football so it's probably best that I watch it from the quieter family section or just on telly/BBC-website/twitter/Ceefax.
