I suspect it'll be easiest to steal a copy or buy one.

Why not W10? It actually looks and works well. 7 is hell.

I have one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/ARCTIC-Freezer-Pro-Rev-Multicompatible/dp/B002G392ZI
Considerably chunkier than the stock cooler but possibly just sneaks under 10cm (but I'm not 100%). Only mounts from the front from what I remember

Give Prime95 a go to see how hot the processor will get.
But the temps you mentioned sound fine. If you've not overclocked it then I expect a stock cooler will be plenty good enough. -

I have both the 32 bit and 64 bit iso files downloaded direct from microsoft, therefore they are unadulterated. Let me know which one you need and i will upload a copy to onedrive.
Here is a link to the old digital river iso page, updated.

Haven't tried this myself but saw it posted recently...

W10 doesn't play well with Alienware and Dell not offering any support for older machines.

Thanks for the advice guys. I will quit worrying. Was looking at one of these as I only have 10cm of room for a cooler... http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B007D8AXK4/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_img?_encoding=UTF8&colid=25BDW2I9QOEZO&coliid=I14SPBFPDAE0IJ
Now, on to power supplies, I think I need one with 90 degree angles on the HDD connecters due to where mine are meant to be mounted (flush on the bottom of the case). Make sense? Do I need to go full modular? If not then whats a good semi (fnar fnar) as I want as few cables as possible (due to crampedness.). -

Nice spot - that's useful to know!

Hive mind, how does this look as a reasonably budget upgrade pack? Couldn't bring my PC back to life and don't want to waste any more time fiddling.

One thing I wasn't sure about - for the same price I can get faster (clock speed) RAM with a higher latency though... Don't know which is more important here.

I have a spare i3 4330 if you fancy second hand? Would let it go for £70. Barely used and with stock cooler. Would leave you most monies for upgrading other parts. It's socket 1150 so you'd need a differnt board, not really sure what the difference is/means?
-
• #2464
Thanks for the offer, I'm going to stick with socket 1151 though as it's the most recent (supports DDR4 and skylake) and I want the option to pimp in a year or so... Got 7-8 years out of the last lot!

Know anyone with an MSDN account? They will have discs or access to download Windows ISOs.

Win 7 is fine but yeah I'd go for Win 10 now.
-
• #2467
The rollback from Win 10 to 7 works fine (so long as you've spare HDD space and do it in a month) so it's not much of a risk installing it to see whether the drivers are there and uninstalling if not.
I had one machine (a crappy bargain tablet) that was missing drivers so rolled back to Win 8 on that.

my external storage drive died (protip: the buffalo diskstation ddr is eye wateringly fast but reviews now seem to state they are pretty much 100% likely to die on you).
looking to replace it with a 2 bay nas, ideally one that can run sabnzbd, sonarr, couchpotato & plex media centre so I can minimize running apps on my main computer.
seems like a synology box would do the trick but are there any other options i should be looking at? budget 200-400 including at least one 3tb+ hdd (will add another later if need be).
-
• #2469
Stupidly, if you use the option to create recovery/installation media for Win 10 you can no longer roll back.

My laptop's wifi card didn't have a w10 compatible driver so the upgrade to 10 wouldn't work at all. Bought a different wifi card from eBay for a fiver or so and it worked a treat. Definitely wouldn't return to 7 now.

HP Microserver + OS of your choice http://www.ebuyer.com/722189-hpe-proliant-gen8-g1610t-4gb-ram-microserver-819185-421?
I've been running an earlier model (same price band) for 4 years with 4 x 4TB HDD, SSD and optical drive and it's been rock solid. I have Windows Home Server on mine (was only £30 at the time) but any flavour of Windows or Linux for a cheap build. I have sabnzbd, sickbeard (tv equivalent of couch potato) & plex all running plus a variety of other stuff.

2nd info request- any recommendations for a freeware FTP client which has scheduling?
Was using Filezilla but need to automate the file transfer.

Why not W10? It actually looks and works well. 7 is hell.
Worked ok here, but rolled back to 7 as I had some issues with peripherials.
The "look" isn't well done though.
Just worked on other peoples machines, win10 and latest osx, and boy does windows do a shit job at doing a elegant, simple, clearly arranged system. -

As @aggi says, get a microserver. Here's a decent deal that will do what you want.

Wasn't there something weird going on with those HP things a while back? Something like BIOS updates only being available if you have a maintenance subscription.
I have a W7 HP disc if you need?
Edit: lies - it's Pro, sorry. I do have the W7 HP ISO too though...? Get a USB stick to me and it's yours.
