Earphones / Headphones: Where to try, what to buy?

  • ah I should have known there was a video somewhere. It's pretty easy to do :)

  • tried the hacked foam earplug trick. Hmm, getting poor results. Massive loss of detail and overly bloated bass - this is on two different earphones...

  • Interesting. Which headphones /earplugs are you trying with ? I did notice the slight increase in bass but not a massive loss of detail. All it should be doing is creating a seal in the ear so can't see why there'd be such a difference

  • Ok, I know that there is a lot of YMMV in what we hear but how were these better than the E10s please? I tried some E10s today and was a little underwhelmed. The bass was good but didn't get much treble/high end. I do have a cold at the moment which may be an issue but can get the Sonys at the same prie as the E10s so not sure what to do. Unfortubatley the shop didn't have any open Sony's for me to try.

  • 2 earphones with large aperture ports: Aurisonics Rockets and Beyerdynamic 101 dtx. I also used basic memory foam earplugs from the DIY store, think they were 90p for a big bag.

Will try them with my Westone UM3X and the Sony XBA H1 I have in the draw. (I know, far too many IEMs)

I think it's a case of experimenting with the length you cut the foam.

  • Having owned both, the sony's are far better than the E10s.

  • E10s are massively overrated

  • Pretty keen on a pair of Mpow (for tarcx trainer duties) They supposedly have a 'flagship' AliExpress store. Do I want Swifts or Petrels? The magnetic ones are a cool idea, but look far too geeky.

  • It's true, they are. The Soundmagic PL50s really are amazing though. And if you can wait a couple of weeks for them I'd highly recommend ordering a pair for £30 from aliexpress. The included tips aren't great though, so I'd budget for some Comply T100 tips.

  • Massively disappointed by E10s

  • My music fidelity earphones are amazing... Best I've ever owned.

    And at £27 are amazing!

  • I have swift, they seem OK. Not as good as decent headphones for sound but the wireless part works well.

Bear in mind you can get them from Amazon for about the same price http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00OK5BELU/ref=pe_385721_37986871_TE_item for quick delivery

  • rha T10i's are freakin awesome, only down side is thet the cable is quite long, otherwise stellar earphones and would highly recommend! You can pick them up on eglobal for £100..

  • Putting two thumbs up for Sony XBA-H1 in ears. Got my set for £43 last year, they were OK but I didn't love them so they've been in my draw. Decided to give them another shot this week.

They're excellent! Such a solid rounded sound. Heavy deep bass with real impact - when needed. There's no real bloat at all. A very smooth midrange and a detailed but not harsh top end. Happily surprised. On some tracks too there is a particularly holographic quality to the sound - vocals popping right in front while a cymbal splashes off to the left, and back a bit. Quite dramatic and fun really. They are fast too - they don't muddle notes when things get complex.

As a test for harshness and fatigue I listened to the Metallica Black album - a very dynamically compressed and bright production (shit) and it's actually listenable with these phones.

Then something from Will Calhoun - very groovy, much fusion. good times. The best thing is that the drumming is captured with rhythm and texture.

Electronic production - some of James blake is very well made and these phones really show up all the trickery going on and solidly render the soundscape.

I'd say for the price I paid they are amazing. Very high end sound for little cash.

  • I just added some bone conduction headphones to my collection (Fidelio L2 and ATH-IM50): the Aftershokz Trekz Titanium.
I bought them to try listen while cycling and wasn't expecting anything amazing in terms of sound quality, especially in the higher frequencies, but I am very pleasantly surprised. It's not as good as the rest of my collection of course, but it's more than I was expecting. They're as good as the ear buds I got with my Samsung S4 with the same functionalities. The higher frequency

I haven't tried them on the bike yet, but plan to do so in the evening. First try walking around on a busy street allowed to listen to a podcast without losing spacial awareness, that was a novel experience...

  • Finally got the Sony's and you're right thanks. Much better high end than the E10s.

  • another set of Sennheiser in-ears bit the dust - that's it, no more, shit quality

I bought a set of AKG451 for commutes/work - do they need a burn in? sound a bit muddy and unfocused in low end and low mids

  • Hi guys, i'm new to the headphone thread.
I bought some sennheiser cx5.00i for £30 without doing any research (not the right way to do it) and was just wondering what everyone thought of them?

  • so RHA honoured the warrenty and sent a brand new boxed pair of RHA Ma750i to me!
All that had happened was the cables wore out, shame they are not replaceable

  • @ChainBreaker, just got some EB33,,,,hell yes, what a bargain, thanks for that

  • They're amazing! still going strong too

  • You might be interested to know that I'm on my FOURTH pair of MA350s. In 18 months. They've honoured the warranty each time which is as it should be, but it's clearly shoddy manufacturing. Same issue every time, wire at the jack starts crackling and one ear goes over the course of a week. I am religious in not tugging them etc...

4th pair have started to crackle now. I will not be claiming the warranty again, going to try and see if any manufacturers can make their product last more than a year.

  • Yeah the design is a bit flawed there. Mine lasted almost 3 years (2.5 or so) before it was about to snap. I probably won't be using them much any more since I have multiple headphones now. It's a shame they didn't do replaceable cables.

  • Yeah, this is my only reservation on not getting some T20i's. I am so close to pulling the trigger but non replaceable cables are such a flaw...

  • Anyone tried bone conduction headphones? Thinking of getting some to wear whilst cycling.
