Relative success! Have bled the front brake -first time ever doing so, surprisingly easy apart from ignoring the 'wear goggles' instruction and promptly flicked Dot fluid in my eye - and after doing so it was very obvious that one piston was completely stuck. Managed to free it up with a few drops of brake fluid, cleaned it all up and reseated it. Put it all back together and the only point it rubs is very clearly from a sort of twist in the rotor which is proving tricky to true. I'll probably just sack it off and buy a new rotor, but good to finally work out wtf was going wrong. Cheers for the help Ed and co.!
