  • 1x10 without a wide narrow chainring - does it work?

I've got a clutched rear mech and this bike is ridden on road, albeit through potholes and hopping off kerbs.

  • That's what I've always used - single speed ring and a type two clutched doohickey

    Always.

  • I hope so: I've built someone a TT bike without a NW chainring or a clutched mech...

The advice I got was that if you weren't using a wide-range cassette, chain slap was unlikely and so therefore was the risk of unshipping your chain.

The chainring does have full height teeth and no ramps or pins; the cassette is 12-25.

A clutched rear mech seems the most effective precaution to me, as it addresses the problem (chain slap) rather than the symptoms.

  • I've been running 1x10 on the road all winter without narrow-wide chainring or clutch mech without problem - Sram Red shifter, Dura-Ace 7800 crank and Dura-Ace 44t chainring, Sram Force rear mech, Ultegra 12-25 cassette.
