• is the messed up extraction cap purely superficial or does it make it harder to apply/remove the cranks

  • Installation is unaffected, as the crank bolt itself (the one underneath) is fine. The extraction one is just there to act as a crank puller so when you unwind the crank bolt it pushes against the extraction one and lifts the crank off the spindle. I haven't tried getting the extraction one out as I've had no need to but it would probably need to be removed with a drill or similar and a new one put in if you wanted to take it off.
