Yeahhhhhhh thats one way of looking at it. Of course, it's the wrong, badly informed way, but if that makes you happy then fill ya boots.
-
• #2680
Ok, but as far as I was aware they didn't make any components themselves?
-

And let's face it. B&O was about the look of the product rather than the audiophile side.
Anyway, I'll move on and never speak of this again.

You're prob right there. Just it's defo not "Euro 70's Hipster shell"
I bought for aesthetics. -

Anyone have thoughts how to move a large-ish LP collection (many hundreds) from the US to here for a reasonable expense? I moved to London in 1998 thinking I would come for 3-ish years so left them in storage there. And yes it's pretty obvious I am unlikely to go back and I have always regretted not having them. They weigh a ton so shipping I fear would be eye-wateringly expensive (but certainly cheaper than replacing them). I have a fair whack of rare stuff and while I can of course stream much of it the experience isn't really the same. Thoughts?

It might be worth finding out about sharing a shipping container with someone.
I did that when I imported a car and it worked out okay. There may be similar options for people shipping heavy items.

Will look into that, I work for an American company and we often relo people here, I have considered seeing if they can hitch a ride with a colleague but we are never moving people from where they currently are stored :(

You're of course welcome to your default audiophool opinion on B&O, but that line's really not true at all. Just one example, of dozens... Jacob Jensen's Beogram 4000:
A completely new product designed and built in Denmark, with numerous innovations such as intelligent automation and tangential tracking, requiring all-new components. Sounds excellent, looks incredible for 1972. (Yes, a Garrard 301, Technics SP10, Linn Sondek, and more flavours of turntable aren't bad either.)
Sure, B&O have also bought in components, but the likes of Naim don't make CD transports, DAC chips, transformers and so on, of course.
This recent book is pretty good on all this:

Thanks Levantis, now I want a beogram 4000.

Shipping container.
I brought all my stuff back from Nashville and 1200 records. -

Yeah, me too.
Beogram 4000 is considered to be one of Jacob Jensen's most fundamental designs and is a fine example of his purist approach. One of the most-awarded industrial designs in the world and an example of both technical and aesthetic breakthroughs in one product...

Two things I love: the illuminated logo on the second arm with the photocell that 'sees' the record and its size / track breaks; and it's dance-proof (part of those groovy Danes' original concept) thanks to the heavy zinc chassis, suspended on leaf springs, and isolation system.
(Don't get me started on Dieter Rams / Braun. #designgeek )

Oh god. Don't. I've already got my eye on eBay for snow whites coffin, now I'm going to be looking out for these too...

That's reminded me of these:

these speakers off eBay are in and running now. They are a bit faded but they sound amazing. As clear as the proacs on the acoustic stuff, but nowhere near as much bass. That's fine, as I think they may be a bit big for this room. Most importantly, that are a lot faster and better with the likes of high class space rock (superjudge has forced Sarah out of the room)
Best 47 quid hifi purchase ever.

Does anyone have any experience of Celestion DL8 or DL6 speakers? There's a pair of the DL8s nearby for £65 (might be some haggling room) or a pair of DL6 on eBay for just over £80 with delivery. I've read that the DL6s are a higher end model, worth spending the extra? Are either worth getting for those prices?

Puts hand up! Yeah, me. I've got a pair of Series 1 DL8's. They're OK, I use them on the end of a Rasp Pi/HiFiberry streamer in the Conservatory where they perform better than bass reflex speakers as DL8's are totally sealed closed box cabs.
Both mine were faulty when I was given/dumped them. Before laying out too much cash I'd check both tweeters work, one of mine didn't and it was a very trixy repair which involved removing the voice coil to repair a wire break. Also, both of the rubber surrounds had came unbonded on my pair resulting in woofy bass as the sealed cab design no longer was!
Oooooff from dah woof...
Mine were stored for years in a loft apparently, the humidity didn't do the alloy tweeter surrounds much good but the white fur cleaned off OK in the end.
There were dry joints on the appallingly built crossover too. I don't think they were ever very 'high-end' speakers but they're not bad if you can get them working as Celestion intended.

Thanks for the reply! I jusf won a pair of DL6's on eBay, looking forward to them arriving. Reviews say that if they're still in good condition they sound great but they're about 20 years old now. The eBay listing said they were in good condition so if they arrive and they're not I'll send them back and go for the DL8s nearby.

Current amp has the simple Spring clips for connecting speaker cables. I'm looking to get a new amp soon and have noticed that the connectors look different? Anyone able to tell me what type of connector these are in the attached image? Banana clip?

Those speaker terminals unscrew for a bare wire connection. Looks like there are plastic plugs in the ends to prevent the use of standard 4mm banana plugs (EC safety thing) though these are probably removable.

Thanks for the heads up. Will question the guys in my local shop before I purchase it anyway. Will be buying new speaker cable also if anyone has a link to a convo in this thread discussing this topic.
Never saw the point in B&O myself. Jap electronics in a Euro 70's Hipster shell as far as I'm concerned.
