  • Not quite in keeping with the theme of some of the setups here but Chromecast audios are half price here http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/tv-and-home-entertainment/digital-and-smart-tv/smart-tv/google-chromecast-audio-10137628-pdt.html?

    Free delivery too

  • I rented Ridge Racer from a video shop for a weekend. Helpfully Namco loaded the whole game into memory so that you could play CDs instead of BGM. Managed to keep playing it for a fortnight before it got unplugged for hoovering.

  • Picked mine up today! A steal at 15 notes!

  • Not the optimal place for the speakers and the I'm stille in the middle of moving in, but it works.
    Pioneer SA-7500
    Pioneer PL-560
    Chromecast Audio
iPad w. Spotify Premium (and I just recently figured out that I need to manually set it to high quality...)
    Scandyna A-30's

Edit: Just noticed my reflection in the frame to the left. Should've undressed for the occasion...

seems like there are a lot of these quads about on the forum

    quad fm3 303 and 33
    quad 11l bookshelf speakers
    marantz cd5004

  • that style of shelving would really shine with your samurai sword collection atop it..

    don't be shy

  • I'm looking to buy a record player and some speakers, my girlfriend took ours when we split up. (We're back together now but I see living apart as an excuse to upgrade). Any recommendations for things to be looking at? I have no idea of budget, what's the minimum I need to spend to get something that'll last? I don't mind going second hand. Sorry if this is all nonsense, I have no idea what I'm talking about.

  • Lots of suggestions upthread.

  • If you're going new, head into Richer Sounds and try some things out there. They have a listening room. You should be able to get a reasonable decent set-up for sub £35o (Project Elemental, Project phono box, Cambridge AM1 amp, Tibo speakers and cables.) You might want to add speaker stands.

If your budget is greater, go in and get some advice - they've always been really helpful to me. I spent around £1200 for a fo' lyf system.

You can bananas with hi-fi so don't stress too much - get something quality and don't start looking at wooden cable guides for £600....

If your budget is smaller, there's some good things to be had on ebay at the moment and you could build a quality system for under £180 with some clever shopping. Have a look at a few of the recent pages, there's some good suggestions.

  • Just remember that Richer Sounds will now try and flog you expensive interconnects and speaker cable.

    Just say no...

  • When I finally get the front room sorted out I will be adding this to the AV setup.

Got it from a previous job. So much retro!

  • Will they? They've never tried to upsell anything when I've been in (Leeds.)

Just buy quality mid-range and you'll be grand.

  • go used. you will get way more for your money. hifi forums are a good place to start for gear that has been looked after

  • They did when I was in Brighton. Haven't been to the new Leeds store yet (used to be on the Headrow as I recall).

After 20 years in live music I use Van Damme cable and connectors now. I figure that as it's the industry standard you can't get better.

  • I recommend an A&R A60. £150 on ebay.

  • PLS STAHP recommending things I'm watching!

Been given the go ahead for a system for the spare room. Beogram-a-go-go!

  • It might depend on the sales rep. I had a fixed budget and I made that clear so maybe that's why he didn't bother!

  • I just told him to fuck off when he started talking about 99% pure copper and 'directional' cable...

  • I am on the case. There's a collection only one on ebay that's in the North so I have my eye on it.

I promised myself I'd buy one decent system and stop there..... It turns out it's just like bikes.

  • That'd be my response.

I left Superfi when they tried it on with "do you want to lose the whole sale or do you want to continue selling me things I don't need?"

    But these are....

    "Bye."

  • That style of shelving would really shine with your samurai sword collection atop it..

    oof.

  • Ha, I know the feeling. Is an Amp or a turntable you are after? Or both? Beogram turntables can be hellish to get working and prone to failure, but are usually saveable by the right hands.

  • Really enjoying the Chromecast Audio atm. Sitting upstairs and controlling the rig downstairs!
