I was just countering amey's carbon requirement for racing and pointing out frame material doesn't hold you back in ultra, obviously helps if people give you nice things...
No idea who deals in London now they've switched from Ison to Raleigh as distributor - new stock has only started to come in in the last few weeks although shipments should be monthly from now on. Charlie the Bikemonger is probably the most likely to have something on the shop floor I guess, 400km round trip doubles as a training ride...

To be fair it almost worked for Jason...

Ride down, buy Salsa, throw old bike in sea, ride back on shiny new Salsa.
How the fuck does a $1999USD bike end up at £1800? Another reason to buy British.

700x30 tyre clearance, 142x12mm rear axle - should I be worried this won't fit a lot of Shimano road stuff? Am I going to need special hubs or something?
It looks a bit retro and for £1800 I'd want it to blow my frickin' mind.

142x12 is basically the same measurements as 135 but with different endcaps. Hope, DT, Halo etc. hubs have interchangeable endcaps making it easy to switch between, Shimano make make specific 142 hubs. More detail about how it all works here: http://www.bikerumor.com/2011/02/07/tech-speak-142x12-whats-the-big-idea/

Self-centering hubs, ok.
"One of the benefits of retaining the same basic measurements as a 135mm spaced hub, is the fact that it has no bearing on chainline, Q-factor, or the need for a different bottom bracket." Aha, so I don't have to worry about riding a stupid mega Q with the wider system.
I've just spent the last two weeks catching up on 20 years of MTB design...

You know that 56cm Salsa Colossal frame+fork is about 2.9kg (6.39lb) right? http://salsacycles.com/bikes/archive/2014_colossal_2

No, I didn't look that far into it. Weight is lower down my list than fit, cost, other practicalities. Guess it's worth bearing in mind but I'd pretty much put it in the 'too spendy' basket anyway.
