I've just spent the last two weeks catching up on 20 years of MTB design...
142x12 is basically the same measurements as 135 but with different endcaps. Hope, DT, Halo etc. hubs have interchangeable endcaps making it easy to switch between, Shimano make make specific 142 hubs.
