I agree. That article ignores float. If you're using grippy shoes on platform pedals you can't let your heel drift horizontally through the pedal stroke. Also, you can't exert as much force backwards through the bottom of the pedal stroke. Having said that I think it's quite nice on a long ride to be able to unclip if you want to so Shimano M324 or something similar seem like a good compromise. They also allow you to ride in whatever shoes you like if being able to walk around at the end of the ride is more important than the ride itself. Also the "Your feet learn to pedal in circles, because they aren't forced to." reasoning is shaky.
