You don't get the lovely solvent smell with tape.

You're in the Greenwich area aren't you? If so, the excellent Harry Perry Cycles of Woolwich should be your first port of call. Good people and have been sponsoring VC Elan since the 70s, a proper bike shop!

I've still never been to Harry Perry's, only live up the road...

I've been in a couple of times, but never bought anything or had any work done.
I shall resolve to give them a go.

I'm sure I saw some on the shelf at Isambards a while back as well.
Starting to feel spoilt being out of town and having a minimum of three old school workshop-like bike shops (at least two are family run), and the cycle workshop co-op too.

I moved away 20 years ago, but as my old friend Paul Mepham still owns it I doubt whether their standards have dropped, their old mechanic moved onto a pro team on the TdF... I dropped in last year with my Gios, which he sold me 35 years ago!

surely tape is banned on tracks for a reason?
I know there's people riding the track up here on taped tubs without any problems. Officially we don't allow it but I think those rules were copied wholesale from Manchester's without question when we opened and Manchester probably made when tapes were not what they are today.
I also know that the people that ride Glasgow on tape race on the same wheels at Manchester btw.
@Jingle_Jangle apols, didn't mean to teach your grandmother how to suck eggs.
Conpton's, yep that's the badger.
Did know that Ron Cooper's workshop was originally on Honor Oak Park, but had never really considered Vaidas may now be the same workshop. Hope so! FWIW I would dream of letting Vaidas near my bike.
Agree about Edwardes. Cliff Shrubb built bikes there previously I believe.
I get what you mean about always-empty bikeshops with F all basic parts or tools. I'll remember SeaBass next time I'm rueing this reality.
The preponderance of OTP-only shops, and the healthy state of bike-thieves' income are surely related!
But I re-iterate: ask that small shop to order what you want, it's there a day later usually.
(Not at anyone in particular) Oh yeah and on the subject of glue v tape: surely tape is banned on tracks for a reason?
