  • Perhaps an entrepreneurial type could start a service that delivers filled reusable pods (with a consistent grind & tamp etc...) and picks up the empties.

  • I doubt they're expecting experienced 'home brewers' to start using pods, more like recognising that so many people are using pods to make shit coffee, so coming up with a speciality option for those consumers.

  • Kalle Freese is doing 'good instant coffee':

The test tubes are stupid and almost as wasteful as pods. Maybe if it kicks off he'll start selling it in jars or something.

This. Being skilled with a pouring kettle and V60 is great, and accessible to anyone with the inclination, but still a massive faff to instant drinkers or pod users. There's an expectation that you need to put some investment of time and research into getting good coffee at home but my opinion is that coffee dorks like me in the industry should do all the complicated stuff and deliver a great tasting coffee that doesn't require the consumer to want a new hobby.

  • http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-35605927 Interesting but not surprising reading on the dark side of coffee pods.

Trying to work out how to change my parents habits, they've had a nespresso for years now and swear by it, I think the coffee it makes is fine but unremarkable. My pa used to have an Elektra but found it an inconsistent faff. Recommendations for a simple espresso machine that'll break the nespresso habit? They like nice coffee but probably not after a new hobby so weighing/dialling in etc probably isn't their bag...

  • Aeropress, preground 2 scoops. About 1hr coaching from you to get them started (volume of water plus time to brew). A possible no no if they like the "milky" nespresso drinks.

  • Nothing's as faff free as Nespresso, aeropress is a good shout, i think a filter machine is the best concenience/flavour compromise, make sure its a thermal flask one rather than a hotplate. Nespresso's biggest fault for me is the lack of body and flavour. Good freshly roasted coffee brewed in a drip machine will most likely be a revelation flavour-wise.

  • Hopefully they'll ban those little tubs of milk/not milk next.

  • my sister sent me some coffee beans from Australia and they're proper black and shiny. I haven't tasted them yet but they look like the Kona beans from this website:

  • Anyone use a handpresso?

    How do you grind?

  • where could I buy ground coffee bags in the Holloway / Archway / Highgate area. I had been going to the City Beverage Company on Old St, but now it's no longer on my commute. Is there anything like that in North? I know the petrol station in Highgate sells Monmouth, but it's a bit pricey for me. Thanks.

  • Does anyone know of a way to calculate the power cost of running a coffee machine (Rancilio Silvia) in £?

  • edit, got that wrong: a Rancillo Silva V3 draws 1100 watts, if you have it on for 24hrs a day, that's (1100*24)/1000=26.4KWH per day. So depending on your electricity tariff, a good price is something like 10p/kwh, so it's 26.4*10 = £2.64 per day. I assume however you'd only actually have it on for at most 3 hrs a day (cost £0.33 per day), and even if you did have it on constantly, it's not constantly drawing 1100 watts as the thermostat will cut out the power once that water's hot enough.

  • holy shit, that's close to what our fridge uses
-ok, I'll edit too: not as bad but still substantial

  • Wow. That is expensive. Bugger.

Definitely did not have a 'discussion' with the missus about leaving the coffee machine on too much when I'm working at home :-|

Definitely not going to eat some humble pie later...

  • Only when the thermostat is switched on. Let it warm up (30 mins+) then calculate the duty cycle. Eg. if it's on 10% of the time then it's actually more like 110 Watts.

  • Solution: buy a more expensive machine with a more stable temperature and a steam boiler that you can switch off. You'll save money in the long run.

  • Mine turns itself off after 20mins.

  • Use a smart plug, turn it off by the internet.

  • Drink filter

  • You can also lag the machines with insulation.
