A bit of Sunday tinkering and I now have a whole 7 gears, 46/13-19 (46/18 previously). Looking forward to the Monday morning commute for a change.

Is it me, or are bike parts trying to say "please, please, no"?

Have received a pair of 10 speed wheels as hand-me-downs, with a lot of use but a lot of life left. My current 7 speed wheelset (on the daily bike) is battered, and certainly need new rims as a minimum. However, free wheels.

Old wheelset has uniglide TT cassette, and I only have one chainwhip handy. So, built up a nice narrow range cassette with loose sprockets, and extra spacers to make up the difference in freehub size.

Tried the back wheel. Modern QR axles are just that fraction thicker. Annoying, but at least the wheel will seat okay-ish. Not deep in the dropout, but not dangerously on the edge. Will look again tomorrow when I try the front too. Hopefully it's not a bust.

Not sure I want to file away at the frame, but maybe the solution.

No they aren't. Your old axle has probably worn down a bit, and your dropouts have closed up a bit. Or maybe if you have a modern wheel with plain axle ends, they are actually 10mm but your old M10 threaded axle was always a bit under 10mm, because that's just how threads work. It probably doesn't help that a 7-speed UG road hub was 126mm OLN and a 10-speed wheel will be 130mm.

Commuting tractor now has guards. Not sure about the flared bars, they bring the hoods position down an inch or so beyond where I'd want them so may swap out for some compact drops... bike rolls over the worst south London has to offer without even noticing!

Thanks. Got the bike complete on ebay for £16, kept the frame and front wheel, everything else new probably £100 total. Tyres by far the biggest expense.

It's a Mavic 700c Brake Post Adapter @Gaston. Been looking for one for a couple of years with no luck as they are no longer in production. Xtracycle produced some as well. There are some BMX brake adapters available that might work and other mods you can do. ACS made a cantilever brake adapter for 700c and 650b in the 80's, using MAFAC tooling after they bought them. There are many solutions, just google around a bit.

£16?! Insane.

Yeah, was a great deal, but it's a low end model and was in horrible condition (rear axle broken, tyres ripped to shreds, brakes and gears hadn't been serviced in years etc) - I also spent ~£20 getting a train out and back to somewhere that showed a bit of nerve calling itself London...

I bought a new wheelset and it turns out the front axle is bent....

Anyone know a webstore that isnt charging an arm and a leg for a front axle DA7600 replacement??

Didn't get around to creating a current projects thread for this bike, but I've just finished building up my first TIG welded frame. I decided to make myself a light-duty tourer/b road basher.

Columbus Zona tubing, 44mm headtube, Kinesis CX Disc fork, TRP brakes, 105 11 speed with a 32t cassette. Looking forward to giving the 32mm Gatorskins a go. Plushy! Built the wheels myself too.

Paint is by Cole Coatings in Peckham, who did an outstanding job.

I like it.

I like it a lot too. Treat it to some nicer tyres though!
