Glad you got this, because I've realised too late that it was a duff clue; I forgot to supply information to get the "road" part of the solution.
Perform hymn about knitting technique in this street (8,4) = Spurling Road
Perform hymn about knitting technique = "S(purl)ing"...but there's no way of getting "Road".
The in this street part of the clue was meant to be the definition, i.e. an address somewhere. I suppose you don't really need the definition part, given that you've got a picture to go with the clue and it's pretty obvious that it's a street somewhere. But if I'm going to write a clue I might as well do it properly.
Anyway, crossword thread >>>>>>>>>>>>>>

It's generally preferable in an urban context to speak of 'streets' rather than 'roads', so that particular substitution would have been very easy for me (if I'd had a rudimentary idea what the clue pointed at). :)
"To perform a hymn" can be replaced with "sing", knitting technique is "purling", wikipedia will have something on that, Note the 'about', this is an instruction to wrap "sing" about "purl". Another word for "street" is "road" hence "s-purl-ing road", first letter 8 letters, second 4 letters.
Crossword clues have a lot of instruction words, like 'about', 'sounds like', "One", "Capital" all requiring a particular operation.
I got the purl bit but annoyingly failed to wrap sing around it...
