  • It looks very similar, however as they're both vintage frames there are no geometry charts online. New one could be slightly steeper.

Biggest difference is that I'm sitting forward more :)

  • Fair enough, worth a try.

Time for some back and forth...where is my removable ink marker... ;)

  • Broken record time - you tried the spirit level right?

  • Using the time old method of "I have no spirit level, I will use a box of Lego" it looks it's perhaps a tiny bit up (phone being a pest atm will do pic later)

It feels like it's rubbing the inside of my legs.
I sit on the narrow front of the hip bone, and the bones are happy, but the leg rubbing isn't so great.
When I sit on the tops and not the drops there's no irritation anywhere.

  • Seriously tho, get yourself a decent long spirit level from amazon, it'll make setting up the saddle a massive piece of cake.

  • I guess the rubbing issue means I need to point it down a touch?

I never had to fiddle with the level, until now.

  • I've never used a spirit level, just ride & adjust until I dont feel like sliding forward or backwards on the smp

  • Or just use a spirit level app on your phone, that's what I did to set mine up, worked fine.

  • I have an SMP Extra, which is in some ways quite comfy and other ways not so much. I haven't ridden on it in bibs yet though, just normal trousers. I feel quite secure on it (not falling off front or back) but it's very far back on a layback post and it seems to be putting pressure slightly further apart than it should be, causing muscle ache. I don't know if this is just because I'm not used to having no pressure down the middle or if it is too wide or too padded or what really!

  • This is a good recommendation, as long you got a long piece of wood flat enough and put the phone on it.

@JWestland as you know already, every bike is different, but when it come to setting up another bike, it's always vital to get the saddle - BB distance sorted first, then sort out the angle.

Then you can finish it off with the cockpit and the like.

P.S. handlebar height can make a difference to how a saddle at the same angle feel.

  • You don't need a long level or long length of wood to set up your saddle: an A4 sized hardbacked book and a scaffolder's boat level (Stabila, natch) are much easier to use.

Of course your bike needs to be level in the first place, but if the top tube is horizontal you can use a boat level there.

  • I'm going to have to write a report now right...? :p

  • Well, if you happen to have "an A4 sized hardbacked [note]book" handy...

  • I have "my lovely bicycle" from Secret Santa two years ago... that may do :P

  • Hm....looks forward to me.

So, the big issue I have is that it's nipping the inner side of my thighs a bit. That makes it hard to sit down for a long time.
    The bones are fine.

I'm quite flexible so I can roll forward a lot of needed, if you need a pic of me on the bike I can ask Le Manfriend to take one.

  • Oh Westie...

  • Maybe it's too far back? If you move it forwards the bit where the saddle meets the top of the leg is a smoother shape and might be less prone to nipping. I think they're often mounted further forward than your average saddle
Disclaimer: I have no idea what I'm talking about

  • I tilted it forwards a bit (turns out measuring with a box doesn't work, hah, so I got some proper measuring tools) and no more nipping.

I may push it a tiny bit forward too and see if that's even better :)

  • I've got a composit if someone is in the market?
It's got a scuff on the rear, where it was leant against the wall.

Only did maybe 200 miles on it.

  • What price? Possibly interested...

  • Yep, got my R685 brakes and ultegra chainset from there on black Friday, they're cheap and real and delivery was really quick.

  • Mantel is legit

  • Awesome, thanks!

  • Dude, I'll sell you a lightly used Dynamic (bought from Lordgun in italy) for a lot less than that!
