when I get my grotto I shall wear that title with pride.

At least you can design your own fancy sign proclaiming it.

I went off to Forest Hill and started looking at huge houses there with lots of rooms. and about the 5th one in I turned to my girlfriend and said "just what the fuck are we doing? What are we going to do with a 5 bedroom 4 storey house?" The place we are actually buying is tiny, but in a wonderful location, which is why that property program isn't called "size, size, size".
At the end of the day kids are optional. You don't need to have more. You may not need the extra room. Also don't buy a house based on whether your family could fit in it. Who's house is it? Why do you need extra rooms just to preserve for other people who aren't paying for it?

If accommodating family is important to you then it's perfectly reasonable to consider it when buying a house.

Why is it important to you though? Your family already have their own places to live.
Buy a house that suits you and your lifestyle. Visitors can stay on sofas or inflatable matresses.(Also, you really don't want to be that one family member who has the house big enough for their newly-divorced neurotic sibling, or elderly but annoying parents to move in to.)

• #13311
i don't know - i assume you always refuse to stay with friends/family when abroad and take the airbnb option?
-
• #13312
I'd prefer the airbnb option.
-
• #13313
Air B n B is always a better option.
-
• #13314
That literally makes no sense to me
-
• #13315
So what did you do 12 months ago?
-
• #13316
for everyone else there's airbnb
New airbnb strapline right there.

Having space for family - offspring (potential) or spawners or same brood members- is a good thing.

• #13318
This, totally this, I can't imagine going somewhere a 3hr drive away specifically to see a friend or family member, and staying in some other accommodation. I'm paying someone else to spend less time with the person(s) I've gone to see, which was the main purpose of going there.
-
• #13319
Agreed. I've been finding it particularly useful the past few months.

• #13320
Mine are a total wind up mind.

• #13321
I do recall your comments...
-
• #13322
I'm calling bs on anyone who says they don't
-
• #13323
Agreed. Part of what makes having a home so great is being able to host family and friends. If that involves needing another bedroom or two; great.
-
• #13324
Depends. Some people I visit I want to stay with. Others I don't.
Depends on many factors not limited to:
Am I visiting them exclusively, or the town, and incidentally other people?
Do they have many kids that wake up early?
Is there a nice hotel in that town I want to lounge in in a towelling robe?
Do they have a guest room or will I be on a sofa?
Will I be taking drugs?
Are they BRM?

All of which are significant factors.
conversely, wouldn't mind an extra bedroom. maybe if I had my office in a grotto at the end of the garden like forum-troll @soul it wouldn't be so pronounced, but having my foreign-dwelling sister staying over (or, heaven forfend, future sprog) making a mess in my vital working space gets me on edge. maybe not a typical use case though.
