  • Beautiful system. Quad 33/303 as well. Lish.

  • Agreed, well-lish!

    Top Charriddee shop find BTW.

  • Cambridge Audio A1, JPW ML310s, HRT Musicstreamer II+, DIY headphone amp, HD650s. Nothing super fancy but sounds good to me :)

  • @Levantis @Apone cheers guys!
Loving seeing everyones set ups... makes me wish I knew more about hifi stuff.
@TRA cheers for the advice, I looked into the Yamaha Amp, well, was about to hit buy, then measured up the area it would sit on and it's 10cm too deep! (claims to be 42cm deep - thats pretty massive!?). My current is around 28 I think. I have about 32cm of space play with...
Would of grabbed that Audiolab (got quite into the idea) but it doesnt have a phono stage and I don't want additional boxes/wires. (edit: I think the older ones do?)
Hmmm... I'm kinda back to square one.

  • I've got a nice little Bose CD/radio combo in black if anyone is interested? It has the common problem of intermittently reading CD's that is cured by cleaning the head with alcohol, but as I am hamfisted, I haven't attempted to do this....it does work first time though, 90% of the time.
They seem to go for anywhere up to £200 on that auction site, but I'm after £50 collected....

  • It's big. It just fits in the bottom shelf of my g-plan sideboard which is drilled though the back for cables. Fitted it in there yesterday and maybe three hours later, firstborn needed taking to the out of hours doctors. Words were exchanged when Mrs Apone found she couldn't open the sliding door of the sideboard to retrieve the baby's medical records as the front of the amp was fouling the runner. Surprised she didn't break the fragile knobs off with her frustrated banging. Manged to wedge it in just far enough to slide the door across, reach in and grab the folder so all was saved. May have to re-think where it lives...

  • That is extremely cool. Custom cabinet?

  • @BRM
How does the Raspberry pi you have work?
    (good/bad)
(what are you using on there? Volumio?)
(can it look at your stuff on itunes/google play, or does it have to look at google drive/drop box)
(can you stream stuff from soundcloud/mixcloud/bbc etc and so fucking on)

  • Mine has a (very good) DAC attached and functions as an AirPlay receiver. Sound in via AirPlay/out thru rca into the Pioneer. Sounds fantastic. I used it to stream Spotify.

Issues: network struggled a bit wirelessly, so I hard wired it to the router. I have a new router but haven't tried it yet. Main issue is watching telly (Netflix etc) on the iMac has a delay in sound thru AirPlay. Unavoidable, so I have just put the audio straight to the amp.

I haven't tried, but the best way is to use it via a hard drive, using voluminous,,etc. The app to control it via iPad is easy to use.

It is sitting here doing nothing, if you want to try. It sounds amazing.

  • Here's my set up, btw

    Rega P2
    Pioneer SA-9500 (heavily modded)
    Proac 3

I'm trying to sort the digital side of things (as above) and have almost abandoned the wireless audio from the iMac trip.

  • This looks bloody good.
    What mods did you do?

  • You even have a little chair for me. That's sweet.

    (Fucking nice)

(I may take you up on it, funds are available for the pioneer mentioned up thread)

  • I didn't make the mods! When I got it, i had it serviced/recapped with magic trickery. The guy that did it upgrades/mods vintage stuff and said these amps in particular respond well to the mods and were worth the extra money while he was in there.

I can find the list of upgrades, if you want.

It sounds very good, I just havent quite got the rest of the set up right yet.

  • That stool is way too big for you, Damo

  • Harsh. Harsh man.

  • @BRM
Nice setup. Does the sound get a bit woofy with the speakers nestled in like that or is OK? May need to something similar.

    Nice Brocky/Perkins model too.

  • The ports are to the front (full of drinking straws), but it does still get a bit woofy. It isn't bad, but I am keen to try other speakers to see if it is the speakers or their placement. They may be a bit big for the room, but I am in denial. Stands with wheels might be an option as they are great speakers.

[theres prob 4-5" bheind the speakers]

  • Any chance of some pics of yours? I'm thinking the older version might be the winner as it has phono...

  • Ah, front firing, cool. I need to spend an afternoon moving furniture and rewiring and create a similar setup. Might even use straws to bung the ports - I assume that's what they are there for!

  • @chrisbmx116

    Have a look here: http://select45rpm.com/pages/hifi/hifisales/hifi-sales.html

A bit pricey, and a bit of a grump, but he knows his stuff. Has a pretty good guide to vintage gear too

  • Proac did it at the factory. If you can be fucked, I think you can experiment with different lengths.

I'd rather try different speakers. I like speakers.

  • Cheers. Thats going to be one hell of a job to sift through... considering I have no work to do this arvo might as well crack on. Thanks.

  • You will need the earlier versions of the Audiolab amp, google suggests 8000A has the Phono input. The newer 8000S has no phono.

  • The Audiolab amp? Here you go, posted it a few pages back:

I forgot to mention that the power indicator light stopped working very soon after I got it, but it didn't bother me so I've not done anything about it. The motorised volume and mode knobs make very satisfying whirring noises when operated from the remote. All very solid and chunky, and noticeably more oomph than my old NAD amp.
