  • "without spending tons of cash"... obvs I'm doing it wrong then - 14 camera bodies, and counting.

  • Ok, I admit my spending has increased massively since the £12 Dynax 7.....

  • Anybody fancy this Canon Sure Shot Max for £10? Was working when went in desk drawer a few years back, no battery to test but money back if it doesn't work.

  • A bit of advice needed please...

I've got an Espio Mini which I'm sure a few of you are familiar with.

It works great and haven't had any problems with it for the year I've had it until recently. For some reason it seems to have developed a mind of it's own and randomly decides to wind back the film whenever it feels like it. This could be 3 or 30 shots into a roll. And before anyone jumps in there, the auto-wind button doesn't seem to work, so I don't think it's a case of me accidentally pressing it (especially when I keep it in a case).

Is this worth looking into sending off for repair (and if so, where) or should I just look at getting a replacement? I'm rather fond of this camera so want to get it sorted!

    Cheers in advance.

  • Hmm.

Well on a side note (not sure if you're aware) - to manually rewind the camera, you have to

    • slide open (turn on) the camera
    • hold down the rewind button for three seconds (rewind symbol appears in display)
    • while holding down rewind button also press the shutter button

Haven't heard of ones rewinding mid-roll by themselves..
..read a comment on that JCH page you posted where the guy says
I had an Espio mini and kind of regret selling it but mine didn’t seem to get on too well with my preferred film, Tri-X. I think it was too thick and stiff for it to wind.
..so would your choice of film be an issue?
I always suspected the motor of the camera being somewhat weak, but did not have problems myself yet.

  • Oh, well thanks for clearing that up. Didn't know that was how you rewound the film! But that also clears up the fact that it definitely isn't being pressed by accident because the cover has always been closed when it's decided to rewind itself.

I'm using the AGFA Vista 200 from Poundland which to my knowledge isn't thicker than your average...

Might try and get through this current roll and then have a look inside to see if anything's out of place!

  • You're welcome, the manual is here by the way (Password "Pentax").

Unfortunately yeah that clears up it's likely something to do with your camera..

  • Looking for a little bit of advice, and I think here is likely to get the best replies :)

I've just started to scan a load of old film negatives using an Epsom Perfection 3170 Photo scanner. It theoretically lets me scan up to $silly number (12800) DPI at 48 bit colour.

Given that I don't want to scan these again, what's the ideal DPI for me to be using?

    Cheers!

  • Basically, if you don't mind long scanning times and huge file size (and have a powerful enough computer to handle / edit these big files afterwards) you could go as high as you can.

In practice 48 bit is overkill, and I'm fairly sure that 3170 isn't capable of "true" 12800 DPI (it will interpolate).
If I were you I'd scan the same image at different resolutions (say 3600, 5400, 7200..), and compare the results.
I heard that Epson software is pretty shit, but check out whether you have the option of multi-pass scanning - with my scanner this gives more of an improvement to image quality than increasing DPI regarding colour & noise..

  • Thanks!

Looking about I can see VueScan and Silverfast as the main two in this area, Is one considered better than the other, and is there any good free software I should be looking at too?

  • You're welcome!

Silverfast is very capable, at theast the "pro" versions - expensive though.
Luckily it came bundled with my scanner.
I have heard a lot of people getting good results out of VueScan as well.

  • Right, here's 3 versions of the same photo...

    Which is best? :)

  • It's a trap isn't it.

  • some expired cheap film converted to b&w (in lightroom) because it was way more fucked up than I expected

Also on the subject of things I have learnt about home c41 development, the main one is that the digibase stabilizer is apparently shit, most of my negs are dirty and have weird drying marks on them. I don't think it's my water as I've never had a problem with black & white, plus one roll of color I did without the stabilizer was cleaner. Going to try squeegeeing the next roll and see if it helps.

  • Thanks for sharing your findings regarding C41 dev,
definately going to give this a go when I have more time.

    That cat picture is fantastic

    Looks like a royalty..

  • It's not a massive problem but it is annoying and I've seen the same thing mentioned on other forums.

  • Might have already been discussed somewhere but does anyone know if Leyton Mills Asda develop film in their photo department?

  • Did that cat take a selfie? Such regal.

  • Had my first DIY lesson in DIY shutter repair today. Tomorrow, fitting 120 film into this 620 camera.
