  • Did anyone watch the US olympic marathon trials? Maybe a stupid question, but why don't we have something like that in the UK?

  • We do. The London marathon! Start list this year for British men and women is very strong. You have to bear in mind that not all the top gb runners are off the elite start.

Probably not the strength in depth that the US has to run it as a totally separate event.

@kl Highgate seem really good at the moment. They must have something for all abilities?

  • I'm sure they do, but old and slow as I may be, I've still got enough ego to find it difficult being the 47th best runner in the club!

  • Oh I suppose, yes, London is a trial race. My understanding of the US selection process was that it all depends on this one race - you qualify for it and then if you come 1-2-3 you go to the olympics. Isn't the UK process a little more refined than that - ie you could have a bad London and still go to Rio? I could be totally wrong on this.
@PhilPub Interesting to see the prize money! I think it's a shame we don't have similar over here, it seems daft to have a few millionaire quorn-touting sportsmen and everyone else scrapping around for pennies. Another stupid question - who puts up the prize money for (eg) the US trials?
