Nice market shot @gillies and awesome lanterns @WillMelling
On a side issue would anyone be interested in a photo challenge in this thread?
I love seeing everyone's shots and comments, I feel like as everyone is here to as they are specifically interested in photography so it might work.
I'm thinking of a set type of photo challenge, one entry per person and no trawling the back catalog. Run from Friday to Friday and winner from last week chooses the challenge for the next week.
Any thoughts, wrong thread for this?

There'd be no harm in a new thread for it, I like the idea

Sounds fun, how will it be decided; votes or the winner from last round ect? New thread would be best.

Photo challenge sounds fun.

I think comment with votes, can't vote for your own etc

I think by votes, I see it as a way to try new ideas and I'd like the ideas for the themes to be varied. I'll start a thread and see what happens.

Molly watching the world out the window. Cheap macro rings are great fun, makes me want a proper macro lens.

Photo challenge sounds good, will take part if I have time.
Agree that a seperate thread would be a good idea! -

I'm looking to get a camera mainly for documenting artwork (paintings and small sculptures) It will be documenting for use on-line and in applications etc, not for print purposes. If I needed documentation for catalogues etc. I can get it done professionally.
So far I've been borrowing one of my friends Sigma DP2 Merrill which has been great, quality probably a bit better than I need, but it's the benchmark I've been working off so far.
I'm probably looking at getting an advanced compact or low end DSLR. The dslr will probably be more versatile in the long run but is cheap one going to be much better than a good compact?
Also, any pointers to good websites or shops for buying cameras would be great. Also, are used worth looking at or would you steer clear?

Both an entry level DSLR or an advanced compact will be absolutely sufficient.
DSLR not necessarily much cheaper, but much better to work with / less fiddly,
also potentially better image quality, depending on lenses, and more versatile, yes.
Ha! Excellent.
