That sounds familiar, we bailed at Chichester for exactly that reason.
There was a stretch of about 500m in which we had probably 4 punctures between us, snake bites all over the place.
We did it with 32c cx tyres, and would recommend going bigger if you can, just makes the descents a bit more fun.
