That's one way of looking at things :)
"appropriate power" is an interesting discussion point... My view is that more is more when it comes to output headroom. I appreciate that not everyone agrees, however I'm happy with the results of the "power first" philosophy, arrived at through trial and error, before I'd read stuff like this:

@chrisbmx116: here's another option; Sony ES is top quality stuff:

Interesting, I am rather more of the opinion that the first watt is by far the most important. Although I favour very easy to drive/sensitive full range drivers...

Don't worry about it, just buy some generally well regarded mid range components and enjoy the music.

That's a decent tactic.
I just go for anything that's won awards in What Hi-Fi tests etc.

Which explains why I have no business in this thread, yet I linger...

There are lots of different paths to happiness. You can get some great kit at Richer Sounds etc. I got a little Denon thing and some monitor audio speakers there, made a really good system for very reasonable money.
But I still enjoy the less sensible many boxes approach as well.

I'm sure that is equally valid. I did once consider valves or class A and high sensitivity speakers but never got round to doing anything about it. I would be interested to hear that kind of set up.

I think I need more power for Taylor swift.
I'm a big fan of Taylor swift.

Mate, if it wasn't for aesthetic considerations you'd be absolutely fine with anything from a Cambridge Audio Topaz (plus Phono Stage) to the Yamaha or the more esoteric ebay options -
The older audiolab is fine too. But don't overthink! Buy amp, listen to sounds.

Got the big plasticky Yamaha plumbed in to my Q-acoustics 2020i speakers and plugged the little Yamaha bluetooth thingy in. iphone and mac picked it up and connected straight away no bother at all and it sounds good. Loads of volume too.
I'm not going to make any snap judgements on the sound just yet as i've got used to listening on Adam A5x studio monitors of late and they are very revealing. Esp in the treble.
Learned a neat trick to switch audio outputs from the mac too, add vol control to toolbar then jut alt+vol icon and you can select between output devices. Makes a/b ing mixes between the two systems very easy. Dead happy with this actually.

Anyone know of a high street source of a mini USB to micro USB cable?
For plugging USB dac (mini USB) into a phone. Suspect there will be some glaringly obvious source of these

I finally got around to screwing the spikes into the speakers. Transformative effect on sound, hopefully not the same on the flat deposit from holes in wooden floor.

There's a set of rega ela speakers going quite near my parents. I don't need them, but I think I do quite want them. Any experience with them?

A tip I got from somewhere was to put coins under the spikes to save the wooden floor

currently pc over to arcam mini-blink, into arcam A19 and out to Q3050s
P38, technics sl1210 and AT 440MLa cart, cdjs and mixer in boxes and to be added in at some point, but the current set-up fulfils 99.99% of my needs and listening pleasure. the amp and speakers are nicely capable in filling the 20' x 30' lounge with clearly defined sound pressure

I replaced my spikes with M5 bolts, with the heads filed into a curved surface - imagine part of a sphere - giving adjustment to exactly fit the floor while retaining a low contact area. Seemed to work fine on quarry tiles and laminate floors without causing damage.
Gone back to spikes in the 'new' house (carpet, underlay, concrete floor) and not noticed any difference that can't be explained by speaker position and soft furnishings. -
