  • Nice to see someone else using these on stands!
I feel mine might need an overhaul. Anyone near E3 capable?

  • Bloody Hell, that looks amazing. Are you enjoying the sound?

  • Should I buy this for me KEFs?

I think I'm just bored, but still, should I buy it?
    amazon.co.uk/Yamaha-A-S501-Integrated-Amplifier-Silver/dp/B00OBM31H2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1453386211&sr=8-1&keywords=yamaha+S500>

I hope you did buy this because I did and there was only one left in stock. Went with the optional bluetooth dongle thingy to stream from the mac and phone as well. I went that route as I really like the simplicity of it being "just an amp" as opposed to the all-in-one networked ones with ugly little LCD screens and remotes with hundreds of buttons.

    Hope you get yours too.

  • I didnt! Are they really good?!? Should I buy it? I forgot to. Do you have it already? OH GOD.

  • @BRM Well I got my LGMs re-foamed and replaced some connector hardware, and got some covers made in the style of the originals for them, with some new clips to hang them on as some of the old ones were snapped. Didn't get anything electronic done - Nick was adamant: 'If it aint broken...'.

Now regretting not asking for new veneers. Mine are pretty tatty.

    Should I? Should I? Nggggg

  • Ace.

Let's catch up for a listen. I would to hear my big pioneer thru them...

  • Hope you've got some pics of the whole process to share....

  • @BRM also they are mismatching veneers... which I could fix. Hmmmm. The guy seemed to think the cabs were OK, not perfect though.

Thing is, K hates em anyway, no matter what I do to them. Really want some low stands (about 6 inches) but that would make it worse at home.

Maybe I should just re-veneer them and flog them.

I hasn't arrived yet. I have no idea. I spent the best part of a year looking at amps including this one and very nearly but not quite buying them. Was in a foul mood yesterday and tried to cheer myself up by recklessly ordering it without looking back at previous comparisons/reviews whatever. Saw your link and went "fuck it" and one-click bought it.

Just got to decide quite how i'm going to explain the big shiny new box to my wife.

  • Thats my main problem. Another damn box in the house. "Her indoors" will go nuts.
I am very very very tempted again, although I do at times love my amp (http://www.hifiengine.com/manual_library/pioneer/sx-550.shtml) I sometimes feel it lacks a bit of power and clarity.
I also know nothing about hifi things.

  • @skully if it earns further approval from the boss, do it!

    Find out what she prefers...

    Oh - dibs.

  • @Apone and @chrisbmx116

My Dad has the previous iteration of the Yamaha AS 501 connected to a set of big floorstanders (Krix Lyrix Gold) and it sounds excellent. Properly shakes the apartment when he turns it up, which he does because his hearing is less than optimal!

Yamaha amps are always solid, good sounding and reliable. Think the current one he has is 10 years old and with constant use (used for TV/DVD too).

  • WooHOO!

  • Not helping (me not spend money).

  • DJ's what headphones do you recommend?

I've heard good things about Sennheiser HD25's but this was in 2010. Are they worth the £90 I can get them for online.

Ideally not more than £100 and pls no Beats. I've been a big fan of AKG, or perhaps it was rose tinted ears. If it helps I'm no massive club dj, just bars, radio show etc. so if you think any old bargain cans then please recommend away!

    Thanks in advance :)

  • Bloody Hell, that looks amazing. Are you enjoying the sound?

Yeah, not arf! And just I remembered them actually from the early 90's, very 'Beeb', tight, dry, image monsters and the bass hump too!

  • Hope you've got some pics of the whole process to share....

    Natch :) Wanna see?

  • Just finished a little project to make a headphone amp following these instructions.

Turned out ok although there's a slight 50 hz hum which I'm still trying to get to the bottom of. Just waiting on a volume knob and it'll be done :)

Bit annoying about the chunk chopped out of the proto board but realised after I'd drilled the hole for the pot that the board wouldn't fit underneath in the case :'(

  • The hd25 are a good choice. be careful you don't buy fake headphones in that price range. Akg seem to have a lot of fakes about.

  • Hi Kyle, yeah I'm a big fan of the HD25's, although for DJ use I'd definitely recommend spending a little more for the HD25 SP-ii's as the single sided cable routing keeps the cord out of your way when stood up, plus the "opening" headband is more stable... Another real bonus of the HD25 and the ii's is that their design is modular, so everything is replaceable, headband, cable, even the individual drivers can be switched out.

  • Very neat and tidy, well done. Good luck with the hum chasing.

  • Yes. Please.
I can't decide if mine sound crackly or its just I'm used to cold clinical computer generated sound.

  • hum chasing

    =earthing unless I'm mistaken?

  • hum chasing

    =earthing unless I'm mistaken?

    IME, not always. Consider....
    1) Power supply ripple
    2) Heater - Cathode insulation breakdown
    3) Parasitic Oscillation demodulating down into audio bandwidth
    4) Earth loop/s.
    5) Heater supply cable routing
    6) Others I can't think of right now.
    7) Sonia!

  • Repeat question from a while ago, has anyone got or listened to a Peachtree Audio Deepblue?
