Adopting the simple, slightly obscene format of monster-meal-guzzling TV show 'Man v Food', the Breakfast Club is again setting diners the ultimate pancake-eating challenge in 2014. Pitch up unannounced to any of the café's four outlets (in Angel, Hoxton, Spitalfields and Soho), order a plate of 12 pancakes and a timer will be set to 15 minutes. Gobble the lot and you bag the meal (and indigestion) for free. Fail to clean your plate and you'll have to foot the £17.50 bill (which incidentally goes to the Rays of Sunshine Children's Charity in support of kids with serious illness). Before you get all cocky, it's worth noting the pancakes are of the thick, American-style variety (rather than our weedy, thin British sort), and they're served with cream, berries and just a drizzle of maple syrup. If that's a bit much you may want to sign up for the Pancake Race which takes place at the Hoxton, Spitalfields and Battersea branches at 7.30pm. Contestants will be served six pancakes each, with free meals on the line for winners and three of their friends. To enter, email ferris@lovetbc.com with your name and location of choice.

    Who is in?

  • I'll bring the Rohypnol™, lol...

  • Is that a threat or an offer?

  • I think you'll find the technical term is flirting.

  • I'd smash this if I wasn't lactose intolerant

  • 12 ... meh
    that's a starter

  • From pancakes to rape in three; you guys put Kevin Bacon to shame.

  • I dunno he was pretty rapey in hollow man. hanging around in showers and that.

  • 12 ... meh
    that's a starter

That is what I was thinking, 12 with enough butter/syrup should be pretty easy. Or am I a greedy pig?

  • I'd smash this if I wasn't lactose intolerant

Could they make the pancakes with lactose free milk?

  • ferris@lovetbc.com

PLEASE tell me Ferris is a real employee of the breakfast club and this isn't just a joke.

  • I make them with lactose free milk, I usually have 6 for breakfast at the weekend

  • I dunno, feeling a bit full, just had a big lunch, I'll see how I feel on pancake day

  • By my calculations, today's lunch will just about be digested by March 4th.

  • I make them with lactose free milk, I usually have 6 for breakfast at the weekend

I shall email them to check.

Having a little experiment tomorrow morning, have made the batter but used duck eggs as I wandered out side to the duck enclosure. Have prepared some wholemeal and type 00 as that what was to hand. Am going to do the 12 fluffy 12 inch pancakes and time myself.

  • And... results?

  • Probably got eaten by the ducks...

  • Trying to make twelve pancakes with 6 adults and 2 children is entertaining. Glad I had two pans.

Decided to practice techniques of eating at speed and enjoying it. Dry mouth issues need to be overcome as the maple syrup doesn't really lubricate the pancakes just makes it in to a sticky ball when trying to swallow. Rolling the pancakes in to tubes is a winner with some fruit or even adding the fruit to the pancakes instead of a topping. Not sure about adding the butter to each pancake as that takes some time to get the pancake moist. The nicest was half a banana wrapped in a pancake as that had the right moisture but unsure I could do 12 like that.

But the one that I didn't try but wish I had, thought up by the babies was ice cream with the pancake.

  • jam and cream is my winning combo

  • heads to shops to buy flour

  • Making dosas instead tonight. Masala sweet potato and coconut raita dosas to be exact.

  • Ha, I think @OneLessCardigan has been saving a separate stomach to put them all in.

  • Went to TBC for cinnamon bun pancakes (not the challenge. Just a short stack) nice and tasty.
