Retrofitting a Belt Drive to a moulton

  • I'm building up a moulton F Frame, and am considering fitting a belt drive on it, but I have zero experience of building them. As far as I can tell it should be straightforward - particularly as the moulton's rear fork has no seat stay, so no frame mods need to be made, however i have a few questions:

    1. what sprocket fits the Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub, I know this can be done as I've seen the same sa hub with a gates belt drive being sold on LFGSS... http://www.lfgss.com/conversations/235963/
    2. will the rear suspension mess with the belt tension? - the pivot is set back about 4 inches so in theory movement might slightly reduce the distance between the bb and rear axle...
    3. How do I get hold of the belt drive?- is there a dealer / bike shop in London who can help me out? - or someone on LFGSS...
  • Belts need consistent and quite high tension - possibly & you'll need an expert here - to the point where it will compress the suspension and slacken itself off.

Save yourself the pain and use a chain?

  • Yes. You're probably right :(

  • Looks like those F frames have enough challenges as it is :)

  • the rest of the frame is actually pretty straightforward. Even after 52 yrs suspension and frame seems remarkably solid.

but i think belt drive might be a tad optimistic.
