Front Mech Rubbing

  • Braze on Shimano Tiagra front mech, Tiagra double chainset. 10 speed.

While in the 50 ring and 12 sprocket, I can't seem to adjust the front mech so that the chain isn't either rubbing on the mech outer plate, or the teeth on the 50 chain ring aren't rubbing on the mech inner plate.
Pretty sure the height of the mech is fine - a 2p gap in-between the mech outer plate and the teeth of the chainring.

Not ruling out that I've done something stupid with the front mech, but is there anything else that could be affecting this ?

  • Is it parallel with the chain.

  • Yup, the chain appears to be parallel with the cage more or less.
Band on mech so not much room for movement anyway compared to a clamp on mech

  • Do you have a cable adjuster for the front mech? Is the H-limit screw set correctly?

  • Didn't originally have a cable adjuster on it. Fitted one today and it's allowed me to get it close to being right - the chain 'just' touches the outer plate of the mech with the teeth of the chainring just clearing the inner plate.

H screw is backed off so it's not restricting mech movement. Want to work what's causing such tight tolerances inside the mech cage first.

I should probably point out that the rear mech hanger is slightly bent. The 28 sprocket is blocked off on the rear mech whilst I'm waiting for a new hanger. This shouldn't effect things up front though ?

  • That does not make much sense, it should be the chain that rubs on both sides before the chainring. Your comment " the teeth of the chainring just clearing the inner plate." perplexes me a little.

  • So rear mech hanger replaced and sorted.

Front mech still doesn't want to play though. Have it dialled in with H screw and and cable tension so it's about as good as it gets. At this point I can only assume the front mech was somehow also damaged when I came off and bent the rear mech hanger. Can't see any obvious damage on it though.

Front mechs are relatively cheap, I'll probably just buy a new one. Can I run a 10spd chain through an 11spd 105 front mech ok ?
