I'm guessing the axles are a little under 9mm
M9 threads are quite a lot under 9mm OD, if you run the bearing inner race on the threaded section it will rattle around a lot. The normal sliding fit for for a nominal 9mm bearing would be a shaft diameter of 8.983 to 8.994. An M9×1 thread will have an OD of 8.79 to 8.97, probably a bit less after the ID of the bearing has beaten the tops off the crests :-(
Talking of swapping bits of hubs to change the axle, I've got some DMR revolver front qr hubs on my polo bike. I've never been that happy with the qr, even with decent shimano ones. I want to stick a 9mm thru axle on them, they currently have 6000 bearings in with 10mm ID and an axle that goes through the end caps and sticks out into the forks. I've ordered some 629 bearings with a 9mm ID, some tubing to knock up a spacer to stop the bearings getting squished and a superstar thru axle. Should this all go together OK or have I missed something, my main worry is the interface between the bearings and the axle, I'm guessing the axles are a little under 9mm, normally end caps work as spacers between bigger ID bearings and the axle in these set ups but I can't really see why what I'm doing won't work.
