I ran rotaries for fun for 10 years. They are simply amazing when fed with lots of air and fuel, a good exhaust system and a bit of internal porting. Changing into 4th at 8k in a 850kg car is worth the sub 10 mpg briefly. It would do 23mpg at 80 and just kept pulling. I have driven jag xk cars with 300 hp weighing under a tonne and my 190 hp sedan would and did feel quicker. The 13b engine I had I bought in a 87 rx7 for £150, bolted a 450 quid carb 200 quid fly wheel and an exhaust with long primaries and 2 1/2 inch exhaust and the thing flew. 13 second 1/4 miles.

And this...
I am quite fascinated by Wankel engines - I find watching gifs of them quite hypnotic and I admire the thought that must have gone into designing them initially.
