    Buy 165mm cranks, buy 55T big chainring, buy 42T small chainring, buy chainring bolts to suit. Screw together. Fit to bike. Smash it.

  • You are correct, but buying a chainset with the wrong chainrings grates....

    I might just buy the chaining's and put them on my 6800 chainset and save myself £260....

  • I bought the standard crankset, then fitted a Fibrelyte single-ring, fitted another smaller Fibrelyte ring for the 24hr which died after 5hrs for some reason, swapped to spare bike while @scherrit fitted the original chainrings and derailler setup back. I've still got this setup now but I have another Fibrelyte ring that they sent out to see if I have the same self destruct issue. I might put the bigger carbon ring on for short races.

    My spare bike is my old bike. You don't have more than one bike?
    "Full time staff" being my girlfriend and coach who volunteered their time (the winner had support crew of 7 people).
    None of the chainrings were thrown away - the broken one was sent back to Fibrelyte and they sent me a new one to try out.

    Total cost for chainrings probably less than the entry to one of your Ironman races...

  • Comparing TT-ing with IM isn't even comparing apples and oranges, it's comparing apples and badgers.

    100-200 people riding round on open roads shouting numbers to volunteer marshals with pencils and clipboards and simple timing setups (no timing chips/mats), etc. You can run a TT pretty much on goodwill alone, just have to collect a bit of money to cover CTT and event insurance and maybe some expenses for the volunteers.

    3000+ people in the sea for (more often than not) more than an hour, closed roads for 10+ hours, changing marquees, portaloos, timing chips/mats, medics and St John Ambulance on site, live updates on a website, etc.

    The bigger an event gets the more it costs. Take PBP for example. It's way more than twice the cost of even the most expensive 600km Audax, and you don't even get free food. You don't get economies of scale as you have to start providing for things in bulk where you didn't really have to consider them before.

    Sure you're obviously paying extra for the Ironman brand, but most other 'iron distance' tris are still ~70% of the cost of an IM. Ironman taking over Challenge Weymouth has only put the fees up by 15% or so. Triathlon is inherently expensive because there's a load of stuff that can't be done for free, then you lump the IM branding on top for extra cash monies.

    Outlaw triathlon (ironman distance) is £285. Bastion (Hever Castle) Full iron distance tri is £324, etc.

    £43 for my local Sprint Triathlon entry (Thames Turbo). Multiply that by 8 times for equivalent distance and that's £344, not far off the £395 for IM Wales entry. That Sprint Triathlon is much easier to manage as it's a pool swim with on site toilet facilities and no road closures required as the run is in Bushy Park.

    Also, you can make a cheap event cost way more than it could. My Brighton Marathon weekend is going to cost more than my IM entry (and probably close to my IM trip all in) because I'm making a long weekend out of it with the family and staying in a nice hotel (I could just nip down on the train on the day but where is the fun in that) compared to a fairly minimalistic plan for the IM (advance train tickets, local B&B, etc).

    The fee is also matched or dwarfed by some of the other costs. By the time I get to the start line of my IM in September I would have spent more on running shoes alone than on the IM entry fee.

  • ha, lol, a 70.3 works out about £250 and a full £450, they are on closed roads with frankly insane levels of infrastructure, shuttle busses, aid stations, kit moves etc, but they are very very expensive to do, especially when you add in accommodation and kit, and training costs I cant imagine the first one could be done for less than £3k, admittedly that's with the cost of a bike as well!

    now you know why I cant afford to buy a new chainset with chainrings I don't currently need...

    BTW - I will never get the tattoo...

    what's the actual crack with O Rings everyone seems to have moved away from them again so presume its been debunked as BS, and id I read something about you needing to effectively gear up with them - looks like a set could be had for £150 though VS £170 for a set of 55x42 Dura Ace rings..

  • None of the tris I was considering this year are anything like that pricey.

    Mine are more paddle - pootle - scuttle then iron man though. Timing being from gun till someone at the finish spots your number, plus the sea marshals tend to be volunteers that happen to own boats.

    I'm hoping to enter some time trials this year. Just to mix Things up really.

    Havent written off trying to nab a spot on the county team for styrkeprøven. Which is 15 cyclists riding a TTT for 550km on road bikes. If I do I will og full aero douchbag. Bamchino helmet, overshoes, my tri/TT Wheels etc. a couple of watts over 550km is Worth having.

  • I don't think non-round rings were ever "bunked".

    Some people swear by them, but I'm not aware of any independent testing that supports their use.

    However bearing in mind Rotor's academic background, I'm curious about their support for them.
