I've been mulling one of these.
Using an etrex and then a 500 or something. Instead of the 1000.

I thought you loved the 1000?

So far it's been the best of the lot in terms of stability/reliability but I've still not used it on a long ride.

I do.
But 500 battery lasts for 24. Whereas have go charge 1000 twice a day.
