    Welcome back to London. If you fancy a running buddy for some South East -ish trail running, I'm keen.

  • So I'm trying to get back into running (haven't run for 6 years) and have purchased a pair of Nike Dry fit shorts to run in.
    Now here's the question. They have what I can describe as a full set of underpants sewn in. Are you supposed to freeball like bibshorts or wear pants underneath?!?

  • I freeball (and I suspect no-one really wanted to know that). I imagine they'd be pretty uncomfortable otherwise.

    My long runs are starting to have the desired effect. HR way down (153bpm avg) on today's run commute. Ankles aching though, 5-a-side tonight is going to be hard work.

  • Averaged 148bpm on Friday's 16mi, then I have a look on Strava and see Steve Way averaging a similar heart rate while hitting 6min/mi for the same kind of distance. Mental.

    Is one of the reasons I have a "beats per mile" column on my spreadsheet.

    My fastest parkrun got me down to 1308 beats per mile but losing fitness and putting weight back on means I'm back up to ~1600 for long slow runs.

    That's a hell of a long way from the <800 that SW manages.

  • "Beats per mile" is a really useful objective measure of fitness, I think. When I was in the habit of regularly monitoring HR there was a strikingly close relationship between my bpm on easy runs, and race times. (Anything ~900-1,000 was good, slightly meaningless to compare across different people since max HR can vary so much...) The good thing with this measure as opposed to simply pace, is that you're not tempted to run your easy runs too quickly. If you happen to run a bit quicker for the same HR, all well and good, but equally running the same route at the same pace, but seeing a lower HR, is an encouraging sign.

  • Last 4 Thursday morning commutes in (which I try to take easily) have been:

    1658, 1629, 1600, 1576.

    Although it's a bit muddled by the variation in time spent waiting to cross roads (I generally only ever have to wait more than a few seconds at Battersea Bridge, Chelsea Bridge and/or Vauxhall Bridge).

  • Never looked at Beats Per Mile but it's held in my log where I measure run & wear HRM. Seems I train around 1150-1200 race at 1450-1500 though my Fell Run debut last year was 1877. Ouch.

    Will keep tabs on that in future, v.interesting.

  • I've got running underwear I like, you can get away with wearing them underneath (for about an hour or so), but I have another pair for longer runs with the lining cut out.

    If anyone knows of running shorts with two side pockets and possibly a key pocket that don't have lining I'm all ears.

  • Advice?
    I ran the London Marathon a couple of years ago, which put me off running for a while. I'm getting back into it now but finding that I am struggling to stop myself pushing off from the outside of my foot (under-pronating?). I had a knee injury one side four years ago but I'm doing it on both sides. I am currently wearing Asics Gel Cumulus 13s (for neutral pronators I think). Any suggestions as to exercises I might need to do or anything else?

    In other news I've been giving thought for a while to doing something daft as it's 7yrs since went long, and following stuff like The Spine Race has lit a small flame. I think I've found the right event for now:
