  • People on multiple bike forums. Newsflash: people on forums have been known to speak arse. I was just checking as I'm no whippet.

  • I think I read somewhere that Spirit tubing is thinner and thus less durable & more prone to denting. Might be bollocks

  • Same here. Hope it is (bollocks that is).

  • I think there's charts on wall thickness somewhere on the Columbus website

  • I wouldn't worry too much about it, especially when there's carbon that you can easily crack if pressed at the wrong angle.

  • Remember that it's relative to what you're going to use it for.

From what I understand more top end tubesets tend to be stronger, which in turn allows them to be thinner, so manufacturers utilise this and make them thinner.

If your bike is going to spend most of its time in a shared hallway of a communal flat followed by being locked and knocked up on street furniture in the rain, then it stands to reason that thinner walls will be less durable.

  • Same applied to carbon too.

  • but carbon 😍😘

  • Definitely.

That's why I probably wouldn't put expensive carbon drops or bull horns on my commuting bike.

  • I do have carbon forks, because for me the benefits out weight the risk and I reason that 1) they are probably fairly thick, 2) they have a wheel axel at the bottom and a headtube at the top which possibly incorrectly I think gives extra strength by reducing weak spots.

I would also probably be happy with carbon mtb bars as well, 1) because they're designed for mtb, and 2) because I don't think a straight bar will get knocked about as much as drops or bulls on a bike rack.

Also both carbon forks and carbon mtb bars can be had fairly cheap.

  • Sorry.

    b'Twin Triban 540

    • £600
    • carbon forks
    • Shimano 105
    • Aksiums
    • up to 32mm tyres and* full mudguards

*not sure I believe it takes both.

  • Not sure about the front no, but the back have a surprisingly amount of clearance.

    Not only it got long drop caliper, but the shoes sit right at the bottom (B'Twin's own brand have same amount of drop);

It is an excellent bike for the money.

  • Totally. I think they've nailed it. Plain black too. So many cheapo bikes have gash colour schemes. If I had to buy new for a long commute I think it would be near the top of my list.

  • Saw one in the flesh today, the old triban it replaced locked not that far away, much prefer the new frame, the shape looks better and the tyre clearance is win

  • Anyone know of any 2016 bikes which are classically styled, but very much modern framesets?

    No disc brakes pls.

  • Genesis Equilibrium's probs.

  • Talbot with direct mount brakes (not under BB)

  • 2020 Future prediction:

    Graphene Grease & Oil !

  • I'm considering this, or the Ultegra build, or the frameset and build it up Di2. Epic cycles are doing a free wheel upgrade to the older-style Krysiums at the mo...

  • "Upgrade"

  • So maybe not great wheels (I have no idea) but better than the stock Aksiums I would think, and for the same as the standard bike at most outlets.

  • Looking to get back in the game after my sabbatical. Having sold the majority of my stuff time to start again. Got a real job now so potentially looking at the cycle2work scheme. What is out there you good guys can let me consider? Main use commuting for now
