  • Ticked off a run I've wanted to do for a few years today - completely unplanned but we happened to be in Henley so after a lovely walk to Hambledon I ran the 30km home in utter soggy filth!

  • liking all these trail posts kids
    @hats cant help linking
to South London Orienteers, they do some great races, including Box Hill fell race last week,
Wimble womble common is mapped with a course about 2 k around and you could just run around the outside trails, keep you out of trouble d.m me for the map

  • Hope everyone enjoyed Parly Hill today. Made me realise I need to get training again.

  • Seeing Pics from Northern XC makes me determined to get club to sign up for future years (and to National xc too), committee has given nod pending more details but I'd left it too late this year before I mentioned it.

  • Did parkrun this morning in exactly same time (and perceived effort) as last week but average heart rate was 20 bpm lower. Does this even compute?

  • Not massively. Really punishing. Training didn't seem to make much difference.

  • Still vs Windy? Aero run vest? Carrying slight virus last week? Hangover last week? Better week of eating? Lower training load in week? HRM inaccurate?

    Could be many reasons...

  • Needs moar mud.

  • @juanito youre doing it right

  • You heard about these MapRun things?

  • Not much by the standards of this thread but did my first 10k today. Just scraped under an hour (59:52) which I was aiming for given that 8 weeks ago I couldn't run a mile.

Cheers for whoever suggested the hal hidgon plan, having defined runs made the training a bit more achievable.

  • ^ winter run 10k?

  • SiL did the London winter run 10k, said loads of people saying it was long.

  • Yep, Winter Run 10k.

Garmin came out at 6.2 miles which seemed pretty close. Not convinced that the km markers were quite right though when compared to Garmin, in particular the 9km marker to the end seemed long.

  • I ran it too. had been out drinking the night before and got stuck waiting for one of my many night buses i needed to get home from clapton to morden for over an hour so only got home at 4am so was fucking knackered before the race even started.

surprised more people didn't come up short on the distance tbh. lots of corner cutting going on and it adds up.

enjoyed the race though, pretty well organised.

I had a free place though so doubt i'd be as enthusiastic if i'd paid £45 for it (£45 for a 10k! gtfo)

  • anyone done the UTMB or anything similar?

  • Hang on, £45 for a 10k?! Say whaaaaat?

  • I know deep down everyone loves documenting every run with a selfie, so I did a whole month of it! https://lambonabike.wordpress.com/2016/02/01/january-runstreak/
I decided to do a run streak partly to see if I could and partly to set myself some better habits. I've enjoyed not having to decide whether to go for a run or not, but should probably have run more (quite a few "one mile" days...). I don't know whether I've really got any better but then my problems with running appear to be predominantly mental, not physical. I'd quite like to continue with it but am worried that it's going to become a stick to beat myself with - on the other hand, running every day has been good for my anxiety, which I'm struggling with at the moment. (So for today, I'm taking the sensible option of getting anxious about whether to continue or not... FML)

  • #rep for keeping it up. I had intended to do lots in January with the intention of entering a XC race at the end of February but Xmas, a 2/12 year old and trips to the hospital (in a similar manner as yours) meant I did one run on NY's day.

As for keeping it up...if it brings a smile to your face then do it solely for it's own sake. No "training" or "improving". Just run for pleasure.

  • Signed up for a half marathon on march 20th, thought I had longer but the internet tells me it's only 7 weeks away. Probably a bit stupid really, I did 10k last week but that's the furthest i've ran in nearly 6 years. Bit worried the distance will break my legs

I was just looking at the Hal Higdon novice II plan, It's not that stupid an idea to jump in at week 6 is it?

  • don't worry, you can get easily get up to half distance in 7 weeks if you're up to running 10k already.

  • Gels onna run?

I don't bother having any breakfast at all before doing a run up to HM distance (2h15 at my current plodding pace). Maybe not the cleverest thing but I've got a reasonable metabolism and I'm not pushing it (tend to keep HR down to under 160bpm on these long runs).

Obviously this does not mean I need to eat double nothing and then I can run a full marathon, so I need to try out the various gels to know I don't end up trotting (in more ways than one) home.

So, gels on runs > HM and bosh one every 60 mins after starting? Will be taking them with electrolyte drink (no carbs, just salts, like nuun) from a bottle or camelback.

Brighton marathon has High 5 so I might get a load of those to test them out, some standard gels but also the IsoGel ones as they don't need to be taken with extra water.

I got a handful of Torq gels for Sunday's HM run as that's just what they had in the LBS. Stomach is pretty strong so I'm not too worried about having to have a specific brand, it's more finding a flavour that isn't hideous. IM Wales will have Powerbar stuff, but I'll be able to fuel the cycle ride with my own stuff and my number belt has space for 8 gels on it so I can take what I want there.

  • No breakfast for a HM doesn't mean no breakfast and just gels for a marathon though right?
    Breakfast and gels.

  • @hats
hey hats, yeah continue because when you dont, you dont notice the inability to run until next time when youre like, oh fuck that hurts
