  • Afraid not, but I still have the piece of paper I signed while drunk that committed me to doing an IM - it's on the back of a voucher for 20p off toilet roll.

  • (was drunk, met some triathletes, signed up to do IM Western Australia)

Snap... was in the pub with a couple of friends having done zero sport for about a year after getting glandular fever. I was feeling pretty proud of myself for entering a sprint tri but they were all doing some pretty hard endurance stuff - two were in the army and one was rowing the atlantic and they called me soft and made me enter IMUK. I'd never run more than 5k and didn't even have a bike but I ramped up the miles over about 6 months, massively over trained and ran the race with a horrible stress fracture in my ankle and a ton of painkillers and anti-inflammatories.

  • I'm all about the papzakdag, me.

There's Papzakdag-kabobs, papzakdag creole, papzakdag gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There’s pineapple papzakdag, lemon papzakdag, coconut papzakdag, pepper papzakdag, papzakdag soup, papzakdag stew, papzakdag salad, papzakdag and potatoes, papzakdag burger, papzakdag sandwich.

    That, that’s about it.

  • I'd been thinking of an Ironman for a while but I mentally committed to IM Wales whilst drunk at my wife's cousin's wedding. He'd done it on the back of 3 months training (and did sub 12h).

I do have a background of swimming and cycling but running is a complete anathema to me; up until last year I don't think I'd ever run more than 10k and I've still only ever run just over a half marathon (and that was slow).

Fitting ~10 hours of training in a week (on top of a near full time job, family time with a 6 year old with boundless energy, etc) leaves me in an almost perma-zombie state. I have Monday off training so I generally only feel normal on Tuesday morning.

Speaking of which I have 7x1km intervals to go and run, and then a 2k swim.

  • Very motivating stories. May every triathlete's papzakdag be a good one.

  • Of course, not two months after getting a 920xt (Tri Bundle) my health insurance (Vitality) adds it to their list of devices I can get a 50% discount on, even the Tri Bundle version.

Limited to one device per lifetime of the plan so I'll plan to use it to buy the next upgrade.

  • ooof - buy one - sell for £300 and get a fair bit back!?

turns out the little race review I wrote for 220 triathlon is actually a 2 page spread with pictures of me, a few friends have been sending it to me digitally, so need to go and pick myself up a copy - just waiting for the sponsorship offers to start rolling in! ;)

  • Nice work Ed.

Can't sell on the device that I buy through Vitality, but I could sell the one that I already have. But I think I'll wait a year or two for the next version to come out and hopefully use the deal to upgrade cheaply then.

Got time for a cheeky 1k swim on a Monday now as my daughter has been moved up a stage in her swimming lessons and she's now in the big pool which means no poolside spectating required/allowed; will have to spend that time swimming myself. A swim is also nice on the legs the day after a long run.

It won't be long before her technique is far better than mine. *sigh*

  • Got time for a cheeky 1k swim on a Monday now

Forgot that the swimming lessons use all of the lanes, leaving just a double width lane for general messing about so not really the place for lengths (not that it stops some people). Still, got 500m or so in in sets of 67m with some at a far faster pace than I'd normally do.

  • awesome finish to what was possibly the hardest training block of my life, coming from 2 weeks out due to shingles ive gone from a ctl of 93 to 113 in 4 weeks, ended with a 1:29:06 half marathon yesterday (PB is 1:27:58), looking forward to a recovery week, but also feeling really motivated for the next block already, trying to work in a mini taper for Wokingham half in 2 weeks, so might cut recovery week short by a day to do a long hard ride on Sunday to give me Saturday free and might skip Fridays work outs as well to give me 2 whole days recovery/taper.

bit of fitness testing in amongst the rest and recovery this week, hoping to see a couple of improvements but not pinning too much hope on it...

  • boom, 4 seconds off my CSS, massage tonight and then CP20 tomorrow and VDOT Friday or Saturday....

  • The hard effort paying off. Good work!

Must get around to doing a proper CSS test. Wednesday isn't the day for it though, I have the time in the pool but the lanes are busy and I will have already done running intervals that morning (9x800m today I think).

  • I believe CSS is supposed to be done fully rested, testing/going flat out during a recovery week always feels a bit strange but its generally quite short so to my mind it follows that lower volume maintain intensity that I like during a taper. also interesting that I hit 170bpm in the 400m section...

  • Didn't get a chance to do a proper CSS test today as I just wanted to get back to doing the distance, but did surprise myself with a pretty quick (for me) 200m and 400m sections.

I'm rubbish at pacing myself for faster efforts. Tend to go out way too quick and then fail to keep up with it.

Also ordered a zone3 tri top today. Conversion to slvlss almost complete. Just need to put my bike helmet on backwards and leave my gloves on for the run.

  • Testing completed for the week, i have changed protocols slightly for bike and run and tests are now harder so calling progress all around, the run test was interesting as i moved from using Garmin distance to running at the track, the Garmin said i'd done 3.1km, so suspect improvement is much bigger than it appears, equivalent pace calculation suggests a 1:25 half mara is well within the realms of possibility next weekend!

    CSS 1:35 - 1:31
    CP20 305 - 305
    VDOT 3km 10:44 - 10:36

  • Excellent. I'm starting to get some consistency back into my training so almost feel like I could do some testing soon. I might pencil it in for the end of Feb.

  • Got a bit further with my .fit file analyser last night. Now pulling out LENGTH data from pool swims, just have to fiddle a few bits to work out the pauses between lengths/intervals and then I can have it automatically extract stats like the best 200m and 400m times from a swim. Need to get back into the big swim habit. Only managed a max of 2,000m since the new year but at least I finished that feeling like I could have gone on for another 40 minutes.

180km ride at the weekend went well, 8h45 moving time (and about 1h stopped) which isn't bad given:

    • I've done no real cycling for months (just 30km a week commuting)
    • It was bloody windy on Sunday
    • I took the 67" fixed
    • I set off with no breakfast and didn't have a great plan for food

After last week's hideous 24k long run, have just a fast 10k to do this week on top of the steady/easy stuff, pushed a bit harder on the second half of today's commute but not enough to call it a fast run so I'll do my usual RP/Putney Heath loop (with evil boggy hilly 1km section in the middle) tomorrow as the fast one. Might get time on Saturday to sneak in the intervals I didn't get time for yesterday and then I'll have Sun/Mon off running.

  • Good stuff, sound like things are ticking over nicely and the run is coming along really well!

I feel as though this block is slipping along too easily and getting a little concerned that I'm not pushing hard enough - I did plan two races fro it but will pull out of the offroad duathlon I'm supposed to be doing as I have a meeting the same day so it'll mean a bit more training...

Been spending a lot more of my turbo sessions "in position" with a big mirror in front of me to keep me as tight as possible, slowly working my way up to probably 20 minutes max in any one time, and will actually go outside this weekend as the weather looks ok, still debating turning up on my (tri) club ride on my TT bike or going on the winter bike....

  • Tough one. It would be most satisfying to smoke others on a winter bike, but then again it's good to get in as much training in the aero position as possible. I purged my bikes and bike part hoard, so any geared TT will be on a 531c Peugeot from the late 80's and 60mm carbon clinchers....

I've had a stupidly long-lasting cold, and now an Achilles issue from a childrens soft-play of all places, so I've run twice in about 2 weeks...therefore turning my attention to cycling and booking in some TT's. So I figured I'd like to buy some new shoes to replace my 6 year old SIDI's, and thought that they may as well be Tri-specific. What do people recommend?

I suppose they don't have to be tri specific, but a buckle and 2x wire closures don't work well in Triathlon, so would like something easier to slip on...

I'd only get into aero on the 30k before and after I'm probably doing, and would be pretty bad form to turn up for my once a month ride with the club only to tear their legs off all day!

Shoe wise, it depends on your feet obvs but the Shimano TR9s are supposed to be good, and the last model of Sworks Tri Vents can be had at a decent discount at the moment, not that I've used either of them. been looking fro new shoes for this year as I still have the bottom of the range spec ones that I bought when I first started triathlon, and have just been using my bonts for 70.3s as I figure the small time penalty is worth it for the comfort!

  • 10km of swim in the last 6 days and on track for 55km of running this week.

0km of bike as Mrs GB has been away for a week and I'd rather squeeze in swims/runs around MiniGB's school hours and my work hours than go for a long ride (had a 180km ride last weekend to be fair).

Odd how quickly it builds up so that that kind of training load seems quite 'normal'.

CTL building up steadily, now 66 (including swimming) which isn't bad for me.

  • Joe Skipper 2nd at IMNZ in 8h09m. The win will come soon.

  • yeah in fairness he went faster than cam brown did last year, seems like he really needs to work on his swimming though!
