  • I travel for work pretty frequently, often very brief trips where I arrive in (say) Barcelona in the evening, find my hotel then go for a run or walk around wherever I am, get some dinner etc.

The next day I'll head straight to a meeting or series of meetings and then back to the airport.

Often in the evening I find things (views, buildings, events) that I'd like to grab a photo of and my iPhone camera is not equal to the task - so I'd like a little point and shoot, but one that offers the ability to manually focus and so forth if desired.

I've done a little research and the Ricoh range seem recommended for this type of requirement?

  • Any particular model? The review I read of current one said (kind of between the lines) to either wait for the next one as this was a bit of a half-hearted update, or get an older model as that represented much better value for money.

  • @dammit - GR2 has some added bells and whistles but basically you have the same sensor and the same control layout as the GR. So if you can live without wifi exposure control (the GR already works well with eye fi cards) you'll probably be fine with the GR.

Your described use case is one of the two reasons I bought mine. The other is that it fits perfectly in a little dry bag in a jersey pocket.

  • Ok, using Amazon as a comparison site the GR is £433.88 and the GR2 is £440.99.

If there's only £7 in it I imagine that the GR2 wins!

  • Is the Sony RX1 not a good option for this? Tiny, with a full frame sensor and depending on the version with a viewfinder.

  • They look to be a little spendy.

  • Sorry meant RX100.

  • I just sold mine for $525C (£264), better price than I hoped for, not as much as some predicted. Sounds like a good match for you, as long as you're comfortable with the 28mm equivalent lens, I wasn't and re-purchased the lumpier, a little slower and smaller sensored GXR w/50mm equivalent.

  • Your rx100, or you GR2?
