(was drunk, met some triathletes, signed up to do IM Western Australia)
Snap... was in the pub with a couple of friends having done zero sport for about a year after getting glandular fever. I was feeling pretty proud of myself for entering a sprint tri but they were all doing some pretty hard endurance stuff - two were in the army and one was rowing the atlantic and they called me soft and made me enter IMUK. I'd never run more than 5k and didn't even have a bike but I ramped up the miles over about 6 months, massively over trained and ran the race with a horrible stress fracture in my ankle and a ton of painkillers and anti-inflammatories.
