Rattle can black, straight onto factory clear coat?

  • Was wondering whats everyones opinion on diy spray jobs? I think most people could turn this into a week long project with proper prep time included but I'm just looking to know if I want acrylic spray paint or the other type to better stick to a gloss factory clear coat. The color in doubt will be a satin/flat black.

  • Quite the comical link to roll through but with out a picture of max's bike/new paint job it just left me frustrated.

Guys, this is just going onto a bmx frame, that I bought on sale, and have the exact same frame of just it came in raw/clear coat... I want black. I've canned my old bmx bikes enough times I should know if an acrylic or enamel based paint sticks better to factory clear coat but I simply don't.

I did this exact project a year ago, no prep or sanding, straight onto the clear coat and the paint held great for a year. I think it was a textured flat black or one of the "BBQ/Car Engine approved" cans.

  • Coversall works well on steel..... so I've heard.

  • What material is your frame?

  • Raw 4130 Chromoly tubing with a factory produced gloss clear coat.
