  • Silly question, but is it possible/sensible to build a mix-and-match 1x10 drivetrain for light-touring/gravel riding/winter training/commuting etc?

    I have a couple of 10 speed RDs in my parts bin (Rival and Ultegra) and I'm wondering whether I can just throw them on a bike with a single ring up front (probably Alfine?) without any issues? I've heard stories of dropping the chain on 1x setups and solving this by using narrow/wide chain rings, clutched derailers and chain catchers but since I've never done it myself I can't really imagine chain dropping to be a frequent problem?

    Depends how you ride. Try it with the Alfine crank and the Rival RD, and if you find you're constantly dropping the chain you can always upgrade to a narrow/wide and/or a Type 2 10-speed SRAM MTB RD later.

  • The simplest fix for chain drop is to use regular chain ring but adjust the rear derailleur tension to the maximum possible. Depends on the type of derailleur but requires a bit of disassembly to move the spring up a few notches. That should solve the majority of woes, failing that these http://www.wolftoothcomponents.com/collections/chainrings have longer teeth and stop the chain jumping off the ring. Or you could just leave your front mech on to do the same job as a chain catcher.

  • I've run a 1x10 setup on a multispeed chainring and long cage mtb derailleur with no clutch, the chain drops, but only when the ride is rough enough.
    So It depends on the riding and maybe a single speed chainring on the alfine would hold the chain better.

    I always forget to add tubes to my PX orders and my LBS sells them for £10ea - hence mending is the only option!
    I've been putting the job off for so long - I rode the falling leaves sportive back in the autumn with no spare tubes in my pocket

  • Alfine cranks have a chainguard don't they? Add a £4 Deda dog fang or similar to the down tube and I doubt you'll suffer any chain drops

    I have a 1x10 with a similar drivetrain to above, with an untouched road rear mech. No chain drops in 3 months of on and off road use

  • Caad10 race geo (traditional), defy endurance (longer headtube).

    Go for the one you think it'll fit you the best, both are good frames.

  • I went to evans cycles and cycle surgery the other day and tried both and they both fit well despite being different geos. So im stuck

  • Both have their merits, I'd be more inclined to go with the Cannondale if you get a good carbon post, bb86 on Giant's is annoying as you're essentially limited to GXP and Shimano cranks. If you don't mind that though, the Defy will probably ride better (I've ridden an advanced, not a composite, and a Caad10) and probably be lighter - but defy composite frame weights are hard to find

    As with everything- this is subjective, in the extreme.
    I hated the defy I hired in Mallorca, it was just so dull to ride.
    So, now you have two contradicting viewpoints. ;)

  • Ive read reviews on the defy and heard it seems "sluggish" which isnt what I like, I like a more race and resposive geometry. So caad10 does seem the better option.
