Silly question, but is it possible/sensible to build a mix-and-match 1x10 drivetrain for light-touring/gravel riding/winter training/commuting etc?
I have a couple of 10 speed RDs in my parts bin (Rival and Ultegra) and I'm wondering whether I can just throw them on a bike with a single ring up front (probably Alfine?) without any issues? I've heard stories of dropping the chain on 1x setups and solving this by using narrow/wide chain rings, clutched derailers and chain catchers but since I've never done it myself I can't really imagine chain dropping to be a frequent problem?
I've run a 1x10 setup on a multispeed chainring and long cage mtb derailleur with no clutch, the chain drops, but only when the ride is rough enough.
So It depends on the riding and maybe a single speed chainring on the alfine would hold the chain better.
