The biggest tyre size I'm going to run is 28mm, so any wider than about 35mm and it's just wasted width and extra ugliness.
I bought the narrow SKS Bluemels in the end, similar to Chromoplastics but rounded, no ugly translucent strip, matt black finish and cheaper. I'm yet to fit them/have them fitted but I've seen them on other bikes and they look great.
They look good, I've had no problems with them despite daily use, and they're flexible enough that my whole bike rests on the back mudguard in the shed (hung from a Clug) and they spring back to where they should be every day.
