La Piovra Lo Pro X potential project...

Posted on
  • Hey everyone,
I'm potentially starting the next project in a few months. This frameset looks gorgeous but I'd like some outside opinions first. All are welcome!
I haven't owned/ridden a proper lo pro bike before nor do I fully understand why some steel frames are as expensive as they are. I don't want to buy a frame simply because it looks good (should perform well too..)
Questions: Why do some prefer high quality steel over other materials (high quality al or carbon)? Would a steel lo pro bike be a good track bike or rather city bike? And, the everlasting question does the triple triangle design actually improve rigidity?
Thanks in advance and here's a picture of this beauty.

Personally I could comment, but it looks cool as!!

Nice choice of frame, ild love it!

  • 1) Carbon downsides: Expensive for good quality. The stiffness makes UK roads quite unpleasant. Buying second hand comes with the potential for invisible damage as only x-rays will reveal cracks. If it fails then it does so catastrophically and can kill you. Easy to damage without being aware of it.
2)Aluminium downsides: More prone to cracks which often can't be repaired as welding ruins the heat treatment (high quality frames). Welds can be ugly.
3)Why Steel? : Buying second hand can assess everything to ensure no hidden surprises (frame straight, cracks visible, threads good, etc). It dents before failing (generally) so can still be used after crash, if it is lugged a tube can be replaced. Just as lightweight and the stiffness can be controlled by frame builder's choice of tubing and profile for personal ride comfort and demands. Lugs are pretty, chrome is shiny. Just as lightweight and the ride quality is superior (the biggest point in my view).

  • Cromor tubing is good but at £700 everything about the frame in question is for aesthetics, and aesthetics mean hipster tax. You can probably get a great condition cromor track frame second hand for £200. In my experience fancy ass frames can be a real pain as they come with worry (theft, damage, lack of use). Just my opinions, remember quality is not inherent with price, just trying to help

It terms of whether it is a good bike for the city, thats entirely up to you. Good build here of a lo pro for city use - https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/252878/?offset=100

  • it might be cool if it didn't say BLB on it...

  • tremendous waste of money.

  • I regret buying BLB la Piovra. It's just a bit faggy now IMO. I prefer more vintage style bikes. The annoying thing is no one will buy it, purely because it says BLB.
