Radial lacing with that many spokes just looks daft... right up to the point where it rips your hub apart!

Basso Ascot is my dream bike. I nearly bought one a size too big just to own one. This is fantastic apart from the black stem + white bars situation...too loud / distracting. And as has been said before, Shamals are ugly. Just quibbling though as the frame is stunning.

Black stem, white tape, totally classic and totally pro setup! Those mirage ergopowers are poor form though.
Shamals are beautiful wheels but the type is out of place on this build. 1993 model Shamal would be closer.
Anyway, I'm curious what you'd envisage as a perfect build.

Your vision is always skewed towards Shimano. You have to look ahead. I'm curious to see what innovation this will lead to. Certainly opens the door to a more thorough integration between frame and derailleurs.

Apologies for the terrible image quality, but here is an image of the bike as sold at the time.
However period correctness isn't my priority, I just prefer silver stems and narrow rims. I'd probably build up with STIs if I had one.

this one is pretty good looking too

Much better, the last one had me in conflict.

I agree on this one.
