  • Hugely disappointed by The Revenant.

Pro's - beautiful scenery; a few (maybe two) long shots put to good use; great acting by Leoonardo Dicaprio for the section of the film where he didn't have to talk; bear scene; not much else.

Con's - Tom Hardy playing a slight variation on the character that he always plays; Leo's acting when he started talking more frequently towards the end; loads of superfluous long shots having no great effect other than to get critics talking; the number of ordeals that Leo's character had to go through becoming laughable - it became like a very violent slapstick/Tom & Jerry cartoon and people were laughing in the cinema; faux arty shots that didn't serve any purpose other than to give the illusion of some greater meaning; story was thin. Overall, self-conscious Oscar-bait.

I did see Out of the Furnace which took me by surprise. I'd avoided it based on lukewarm reviews and not hearing much else about it but I thought it was a very beautiful film. Solid acting and very touching, considering the bleakness of the storyline.
