• Bigot. I dislike this word - it has lost all meaning and now just means 'person with whom I disagree'

    Yup, anyone throwing around accusations of bigotry probably doesn't fancy having a proper discussion. Also see "reactionary", "misogynist", "racist", "hypocrite".

    Okay, I'll bite, I wasn't going to respond to this as other have done so very well.

    The whole reason the term "political correctness" happen because it was to complain about measurement being made to enable disadvantage people to enjoy the same (or near) advantage that you do (white able male especially).

    Bigotry is the closet term I can find that can be applied to all kind of discriminatory, from ableism, sexism, racism, genderism, religious intolerance, ageism, linguicism, etc.

    It happen everyday in small increment, it's like a cheat word to get out of calling a bigot.

    In my example; complaining about the cinema putting fucking subtitles to accommodate the few, every time I go to the cinema, there's always, and I mean always hearing people complaining loudly about how the subtitles ruined Star Wars for them, how it's pointless to put it up because we probably still couldn't understand what's going on (!!), even complain loudly while watching the film just to lick salt to an already deep wound, this is a small example I can provide, but the gist is this;

    For the last several decades, disadvantage people have to work really hard just to accommodate themselves in this world, to pleased the privilege, to make it easier for them.

    The moment they got a small shred of advantage, it's suddenly seen as Political Correctness.

    Rant over.

  • I totally get all of that Ed, but I think that accusations of political correctness and accusations of bigotry seem to be opposites sides of the same coin. They're just ways of broad-brush dismissing past and future points that someone might make without constructively adding to the discussion.
