Is it that clear?
Because it seems every time they have a message that's apparently clear, it gets misunderstood very widely and ends up pissing off a lot of people.

Political cartoons can be open to interpretation (I personally totally do not get the Onion ones) and SH are pretty close sometimes to that Fine Line of humour VS just being a dick, so no wonder people are offended.
But others misunderstanding, choosing to be offended and making a black/white point from it isn't their problem.
(TL:DR too much faux outrage and calls for censorship to me these days)
But it's still important to discuss if they actually achieved something, or just made it worse (the Grauniad thinks they may have) as social norms are always in a bit of flux and we better discuss these. Before we ban just about anyone for causing offense ;)

I think this is because many people are stupid and many others are delibertely obtuse to push their agenda/sell advertising.

It's pretty clear they're attacking the hypocrisy of people/role of media.
Photo of drowned kid = Refugees welcome please come
Sexual attacks in Germany = Refugees all rapists.
Whether this is a good cartoon that makes people think about their kneejerk attitudes or one that backfires and will be used by right wing bigots is to be seen however.
