  • Huuuh. Ok, I'll maybe try it in 3 days... But 2, I can't ! I'll need a rest

  • I should have looked for a guide before I went last year. Catbar (mentioned at the bottom somewhere) was pretty good, didn't find anywhere else worth remembering.

  • I went to Barcelona for my birthday few years ago. There was an absinthe bar. There was a beach.

  • A beach ? Oh ? really ! What an unexpected discovery ;)
Well, I'm thankfull for those extra-cycling places, for sure I'll take a look !

  • It goes through some really pretty scenery; a shame to blast through it. Almost!

  • Yes, I agree. But you know, those kind of challenges...

  • Just read that Kristof Allaegert apparently drinks a bottle of water per 200km. How's that possible, is there dehydration conditioning or something?

  • Yes of course it's possible. I find it easy enough to do in the UK with its low temps - good luck trying it in Australia though. In what temperature was this quoted?

Other factors as well as temp: is he -only- riding 200k or is this part of a longer ride? Is he eating stuff as well? What is it? Did he hyperhydrate before starting?

  • ^ Exactly. Yesterday I drank about 700ml on a 100 mile ride, very hilly etc, but it was 1ºC average and pissing with rain.

When I was in Colorado/New Mexico and it was over 45ºC at midday, I was drinking ~8L per day and covering about 150 miles.

  • 1 bottle per 200k: How big is the bottle? He's showing two on his bike for starters. Also if he's eating icecream and yoghurt he's getting some liquids there. Basically, it could mean anything - maybe that's an average but I'd put money on him drinking more in the afternoon and less at night so it's basically a meaningless comment without more information.

No, you can't 'train' to operate dehydrated. You can simply be dehydrated or not be dehydrated and your performance may suffer depending on how dehydrated you get.

  • I'm dreadful at keeping hydrated whilst riding.

On multi-day things like PBP/LEL I'd drink loads at controls, fill my bottles and then carry the bottles the 90km to the next control without touching them. I'd then drink one whilst stopped and get them refilled, only to carry them untouched to the next control, repeat again and again.

I remember being so so dehydrated (brown wee isn't good) at the halfway control (Holmfirth) on the Midlander Super Grimpeur 300. I drank loads there, topped up my bottles and set off again on the hot day (to climb Holme Moss no less). By Glossop my bottles were empty and I thought "I won't stop at this shop, too early, I'll stop at the next one I see." No more shops of course, and then the route disappears onto minor roads and no more shops were seen until the pub control in Longnor.

As hippy says, needs more info. 750ml doing 200k overnight in cool UK temps would be fine. 750ml for 200k during a summer day and I'd be fucked.

  • For long rides (+100k) I'm drinking every 10min when hot, or every 20 when cold... It's the only way i found to avoid dehydratation...

    Next big training for february:

  • surely that's not true, 133 miles a day? According to strava Steve Abraham has averaged 1,237 mi per week in the last 4 weeks, giving him 4948 miles in the last month

  • Sure, but Steve didn't give Guinness a load of money to ratify the record, nor did he tell them in advance that he was going to do it with a specified start and end date, nor did Steve submit all of the required evidence to Guinness (but he would have been collecting it along the way as e has to do similar for the UMCA).

  • Of course it's true. But to get a Guinness record you have to follow the Guinness rules. None of the other people who've gone further have complied.

I noticed this ages ago when someone said I should have a go at this record that this Bruce bloke didn't actually hold it, he just claimed it based on his Strava account (see the kerfuffle with his Yearly record attempt).

  • You don't have to give Guinness a load of money to ratify a record. You CAN pay if you want it verified immediately or you want priority responses from them but if you apply, follow their rules, provide the evidence they require, there's no cost in making an attempt.

  • Steve Abraham quit his HAMR attempt yesterday!!!

  • Bold move to quit. I dont know the whole story but it sounds sensible..

The Glocknerman is a extreme cycling event for single- and teamracers and one of the oldest ultra cycling marathons in the world.
Start and finish is in the styrian capital Graz and routes the athletes over 1000 kilometre and 16.000 metres in altitude twice over the highest austrian mountain, the Großglockner.
The Glocknerman is also the official ultracycling world championship. The 19th Glocknerman will take place from 25th - 28th of Mai, 2016.

  • Her comments near the end remind me a lot of of Jure Robic, same sentiment and phrasing - cool :-)

  • Know it's not cycling, but man, this guy is my new fucking hero.
    What a monster.
