  • Seriously considering doing the worldwide festival in sete or sunce beat in Croatia, sun, surf and good beats. Already looking for villas..

  • Yeah Bestival it was fucking £4.80 for Tuborg of all things. Absolutely shit.

  • All of these larger festivals are now "a total ripoff, for clueless cunts". Only option is to go indie like Supernormal, etc.

  • +1 for Supernormal - totally cheap, for clued up cunts.

  • I've never been interested in music festivals in the UK, but my youngest daughter was at Reading (cost me 300sheets/weekend) and Vans Warp Tour in Salt Lake City, Utah (cost me $80 for both girls) last summer. I think the idea of being in a crowd away from parents was the main motivation generally.
WarpTour had a daddy day lounge, I choose to see Salt Lake's fine architecture instead.

In reality, Reading was totally mad time with her girlfriends and WarpTour was very loud with sunburn with sister. Not sure she grow out of them.

I suppose it's never too late to go to this,

  • Clue is in the the word 'melt'...

  • couple have mates have done the croatia thing, they said it was one of the best music events they had been too great line up no camping, not too many tossers and if you get fucked off with it you can just go look round the rest of the croatian but you need to be organised and can get a car hired out or take your bike !

  • Going to Primavera in Barcelona again. Line up not announced yet, but last year's was better than any UK festival. Already booked an apartment with pool near the beach, and it's all turning out cheaper than camping at Glastonbury. Plus, no British people.

  • The last comment is key.

  • Currently a toss up between suncebeat and the worldwide festival in sete..
Just did 20mins of airbnb liking apartments in and around tisno, now to do the same for sete...
Both are in July, both warm climates, both near beaches, both good music, decisions decisions...

  • Port Eliot

  • Primavera line-up announced - Radiohead, PJ Harvey, Dinosaur Jr, Shellac, Brian Wilson doing Pet Sounds, Drive Like Jehu, Tortoise, Venom, Mbongwana Star, Mudhoney etcetc. All in the Barca sunshine.

    Eat that, Glastonbury.

  • ^ Except it's not in the sunshine is it? It's in a concrete lorry park by the docks from 10pm to 7am every night with only endless platic cups of Heineken and a shocking lack of drugs to see you through.

We went a couple of years ago. Amazing lineup and some great sets but hardly balmy beachside bliss. Days in Barca were amazing and the setup is pretty cool but it was cold and blustery and I did a lot of pre-dawn staggering and swaying desperately trying to keep my eyes open waiting in the cold and dark for The Animal Collective to finally start their set at 5am.

It's an odd one. Not sure I'd go again.

  • plus at least at Glasto you just like totally get the lay line vibe at the stone circle with the drummers man....

  • Plus they do this really weird thing of having all the sets on the various stages start at the same time. This means you choose your gig, stand there and wait for it to start, watch and hopefully enjoy. Then half a dozen stages all finish at the same time and 50,000 people all troop off en masse to their next chosen stage and stand around waiting for the next set to start. You can obviously dip in and out but the simultaneous nature the timings makes for a weirdly regimented feel. And the fact that it's all staged in a beautiful but brutal concrete future-scape almost entirely at night makes groovy hanging out festival vibes hard to come by.

Still, as I said we did see some fricken great sets. Dinosaur Jr, Neko Case, Thee Oh Sees, Deerhunter, Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear, Tinariwen, Tame Impala...

Great music but an unusual vibe and really hard work to keep the energy up on beer alone.

  • Worldwide in Sete with @cornelius_blackfoot a few years back was amazing. Not really my scene a music wise but it's basically like the best a four day party you can possibly imagine. Not sure how bi it is now but that was a near perfect weekend.

  • Well, last year it was lovely sunshine all the way - starts in the early afternoon and goes on till wee small hours (later for some DJ sets, I think, but I'm too old for anything after 2am). I wore nothing but shorts and t-shirt last year, and was fine - maybe you got a bad weather year. Don't bother with drugs myself, it's all about the music maaaaan, but you can always bring your own. Barca cabbies can sort you out, no bother.

Gravel rather than grass was a bit different, but no dealbreaker.

Plus Neil Hagerty! Angel Witch! Unsane! And hardly any British people!

  • You're all doing it wrong.

    It's all about Benicassim.

  • is Roskilde still a thing?

  • That's supposed to be crackers.

  • as mentioned upthread, going again this year, you and the mrs are cordially invited, not sure what you'd do with baby apone, dates are 4-10th July will speak to you when I see you sunday..

  • I went to Roskilde when Bjork headlined (2010 maybe?), was the wettest on record. People were turned away at the entrance as most of the site was flooded. The site opens a week before the actual festival starts so you're there for 10 days in total and the train companies don't let you on the trains to the airport if you are too dirty. There's a handy train station in the campsite that gets you into Copenhagen during the days when the festival hasn't started which is great.

I got offered drugs here more than any other festival, also people just piss everyfuckingwhere. I opened my tent to find a line of 6 girls squatting against the fence behind it. The toilet was a minute walk away. Beer offered when I went was Tuborg, ugh.

  • books flights

  • I had a harrowing experience when I was very drunk on some Norwegian's cheap Jager imitation when someone dressed as salad fingers started following me around.
